My best friend Samantha S has been here previously so we decided to stop here for dinner. The menu has different categories from Burritos to Tostaditas. My best friend ordered the two Pork Carnita tacos and I ordered the Pork Carnita Tostaditas minus the guacamole. I informed our server Austin my food allergies…yea he commented how can you live without guacamole…I know I have been asked many times! I still love my dish as it was quite yummy drenched in hot sauce woooo! Family owned always taste better than chain spots ::wink::
New drawings plastered on the walls of the restaurant…very cute drawings!
Definitely a must try if you are around the neighborhood!
This is a fun little Mexican spot not too far from Union Square in Manhattan that offers well executed, authentic dishes and a great, take-what-you-want chips, house made chips and salsa station. I've been here about 2-3 times in the last year or so and have tried the tostada, chilaquiles and fajitas. Everything is fresh and flavorful and there are tons of vegetarian options. The service is good and the prices are extremely affordable. This will likely remain on my rotation of favorite Manhattan Mexican restaurants for quite some time!
Hotel Tortuga is a very small restaurant, but I just love it here. I first came here about a month ago for dinner with my boyfriend and it slowly became my "go to" spot. What it lacks in size, it makes up in authenticity.
The food is absolutely amazing in my opinion, and the staff is always cool and friendly. Although, I admit that on my first visit here, it was super hot and humid which made it a bit uncomfortable, but all in all I recommend this place and hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Great, affordable spot. Hotel Tortuga has limited room so if you're going during prime eating and drinking hours, there may be a wait. It's a very frills-free joint, but the portions are large and tasty– I'm a big fan of their nachos and frozen sangria.
As a bonus, each table comes equipped with crayons, so you can pass the time coloring, just like you used to when you were young.
Hotel Tortuga has become one of my new favorite spots for quick, good (and affordable) Mexican food downtown!
We arrived on a Thursday evening for dinner and were promptly seated. The menu has plenty of options to satisfy whatever craving you have (burritos, tacos, nachos or one of their own creations for something new). For the tacos, I was particularly impressed by the array of options they had as they had not just one vegetarian option but in fact five. The only downside was that I wish they had more spicy sauces and salsas to choose from but that minor preference is outweighed by everything else Hotel Tortuga has going for it already. The great thing about Hotel Tortuga is that everything is highly customizable — they can easily cater to whatever kind of meat, beans, rice, cheese combination you want exactly given the flexibility of their menu. They also have free chips and salsa that is available near the counter which is a nice plus (and something you don't see at other places).
The service and decor were great as well. Our server was attentive, polite and patient as we attempted to come up with what we wanted to order. She was also great with providing suggestions for what is the most popular, etc. If you're looking for good (and fresh) Mexican food on the cheap, Hotel Tortuga is definitely worth a try!
One of the better Mexican places I've been in the city, and one of the cheapest too!
I had two tacos – the spicy chicken and grilled steak. Both were delicious and quite big too. I thought two might not be enough but I was suffer after. The steak was definitely the standout – lots of flavor and generous in amount of meat. A bit too juicy and salty, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
My friends got burrito bowls and loved them too – both scraped up every last nite from their plates. One is a vegetarian and this spot is one of her favorites because of their surprisingly vast of vegetarian options.
We also shared the sangria pitcher and guac. Guac was standard. Sangria was more like a slushie with bits of frozen raspberry – a tad too sweet for me but very refreshing. Major downside is the fact that there was no air conditioning in the tiny restaurant on the warm night we were there.
Overall very good place to check out for a casual and cheap bite! Would come back.
This is place has now been deemed the very prestigious honor of being my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city. This is a hole in the wall type of place that serves up delicious, inexpensive food in a wonderfully casual environment.
They have self-serve chips and salsa which is pretty good for my lack of self control when it comes to snacking. The salsa they serve with the chips is pretty amazing – I'd buy a whole pot of it if I could. A must-get when you come here is the frozen sangria. This fruity, frozen concoction fulfills all of your adult slurpee dreams. If you're feeling particularly spicy, get a frozen pitcher of the El Tigre – a layered mix of the frozen sangria and frozen wine margarita
When I come here I consistently enjoy myself. The burritos are really big and tasty, and they have self-serve for chips and fresh salsa which is awesome. I mostly get anything chicken there. I do find that the burritos remind me of California. The burritos are big and tasty and you get a decent portion for your dollar.
They have a lot of options for vegetarians and vegans and meat eaters.
They often will have new cakes and desserts of the day, which are often vegan which is a plus since anyone can enjoy them.
It's hard to find good Mexican food in Manhattan, that is also reasonably priced, offering simple flavors and a laid-back approach.
The interior is old-style and quirky looking, every table has colored crayons, and you can color or draw on your placemats, which happen to be all over the walls in the restaurant.
I believe this is a family owned and run business where the owner and her son will work some shifts and some other non family members. The owner and her son are really nice, as have been most of the staff, pleasant and accommodating.
Honorable mentions:
Rice bowls, very large.
Burritos, Especially the chicken tinga, or even the phoenix.
Free chips and fresh house made salsa (dine in).
Reasonable lunch combos.
CHECK them out.
