Some of the crappiest faux meat establishments I've been to.
First complaint – the tea. It came in this nasty looking metal teapot (see pic). This wouldn't be so horrible if the tea tasted good but it didn't. It tasted like metal and had tea leaf pieces floating in it.
Next and most important complaint, the food itself. I ordered wonton soup (see pic) – the portion was big. The wontons were fried though. You know what happens when you submerge fried things in hot liquid? They get soggy and gross which is precisely what happened. I also ordered the vegetarian duck appetizer – just a pile of soggy meat substitute layers. SOGGY! Veg duck substitute is supposed to be crispy. And I've had it done right at other places before so I know it can be done. The last offense was the "roast pig." That sounds like it should be a crispy and aromatic dish, right? It was just bland tasting tofu (which looked nothing like pork btw) stir fried with some snow peas/celery/carrots. The entire meal was extremely disappointing which rarely happens with these types of restaurants. I don't expect things to taste exactly like meat but I've seen meat substitutes done very well before. This was a sad attempt.
Service was OK and the restaurant was clean enough. Cash only which is a bit annoying.
I don't know why I keep trying new veg restaurants in Chinatown when I have already found the one for me – Buddha Bodai on Mott is the place for veg dim sum. No one comes close! I won't cheat on you again, BB!
We ate lunch there yesterday with a friend and everything was fine. I'd looked on the internet for a reasonably-priced place with lots of vegetarian selections and which didn't have cleanliness issues. Also, I didn't want a touristic place and I preferred something on the quiet side. House of Vegetarian was the only restaurant in Chinatown that satisfied all of those things. The food was very good, too (we shared three dishes). Our server was very perfunctory, although she was attentive enough – and the owner (?) was very friendly. The interior is rather small and drab, but no matter.
Note that it's cash only.
I had some vegetarian pork buns and I had a great experience. the food was tasty and it was a great portion for the price. I'm so happy we have a place like this and I'm surprised there were so few people in the restaurant. I'd definitely come back because I'm happy to support lots of different vegetarian options 🙂
One of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in NYC, serving up a massive menu of delicious cruelty free Chinese specialties. Possibly the largest faux meat selection you will find at a restaurant in the city-everything from pork to shark fin to spare ribs. If you are overwhelmed by the extensive menu (literally around a hundred choices), I recommend the following:
-Assorted wheat gluten
-Beef chow fun with black sesame sauce
-Pork buns
-General Tso's chicken
-Vegetable Dumplings
-anything with their taro…or faux shrimp
The atmosphere is dingy and unrefined, but it only adds to the charm. Cash only!
This is a solid vegetarian Chinese restaurant. The decor is modest and simple, the prices are decent and the food is good. We ordered the vegetable steamed dumplings – nice and sticky, didn't fall apart, yummy; the beef with broccoli in garlic sauce – the beef could have had a little more flavor but it was still good and the portion provided a lot of broccoli; and the pork fried rice – absolutely superb. Go here.
Solid 3 stars. Decor is dingy, service is stand-offish. Restaurant and bathroom is clean. Food is fresh but bland and overpriced.
The tea was brought immediately and was welcome on this cold and rainy day (in December).
I was kind of excited to try some of their mock meats. I ordered the duck appetizer. This, in no way, was anything like duck. It was lukewarm soggy thinly sliced tofu in a mild broth.
I then tried the orange beef entree with a side of brown rice.(extra charge for rice) it was crispy and sweet. Generally good except for some soggy liquid on the bottom of the dish.
Overall, we are fortunate to have a few vegetarian restaurants in this area. I think I will try one of the others next time.
First, I have to say these folks are really super nice. I'd usually go in just to get a container of brown rice so I could take it to Nice Green Bo since they don't offer brown rice. I figured I should eventually try their food and it's pretty good. I had the tofu, mushroom with black beans – it was really good. Could have used a bit more salt but I don't really fuss about that now that I'm on a healthy eating track. Must go again to try other stuff on their menu.
Service:
My friend is a Manhattan native. His family has been bringing him here quite literally since he was born and that *still* doesn't get us friendly service. Quick and efficient. You won't get a smile or a, "You're welcome" after your request for a glass of water (or another container of chili oil because after the appetizer round you've finished your table's pot… Oops! Yeah… That shit pumps through my veins) but you'll get it in record time. Bonus points for easy accommodation for large groups.
Grub:
Wheat Gluten: Must try. Especially if you have never tried it before. Really strange – Really fantastic. You get 3 different flavours. My favourite is the dark brown with a bit more texture than the slimier bright orange and greenish curry flavoured pieces. My descriptions makes it sound unappealing. Try it. You'll like it.
Portions are enormous which makes eating here family style a wise choice.
