One of the only vegetarian places I've eaten at and it's one that holds a special place in my heart.
First time coming was back several years ago at their LES location. Now, here on the UWS, and it feels like nothing has changed within those years.
Pita bread is still made fresh, to order. Probably the best pita bread you'll have. It's soft, warm, perfect elasticity, and fluffy. So delicious on it's own, but take a scoop with their homemade hummus, and you might just think you entered Mediterranian heaven.
The menu is yes, vegitarian, and offers gluten free options. Try the three for $15 "small plates" if you're curious to get a taste for different options.
I got the Butternut Squash soup, and Shakshuka. Stewed vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes) and two over-easy eggs served in the pan it's cooked in. Great for those looking for some sort of animal protein. The soup was very tasty, and super healthy as well in that there was little to no cream added, really allowed the Butternut Squash to really shine.
The restaurant set up is intimate and rustic, a small basement area, you have to walk down a flight of short stairs to get to the front door.
Must try.
My girlfriends and I (a long overdue reunion) decided on this centrally located restaurant (2 blocks from the 72nd St. 1,2,3 stop). I am not normally in this part of town as I work and live below 14th St., but this place was excellent! Cozy ambiance, helpful waitstaff, and delicious healthy Mediterranean food.
We also used a Groupon here ($27 for two people which included 2 beer or wine, 1 appetizer, and 2 entrees). I ordered a Brooklyn dark lager ($6) and my friend had the white wine sangria ($6), she said the sangria was tasty. One of my friends and I shared a cauliflower ($5.50) mezze (which basically means tapa or appetizer for Groupon purposes). The cauliflower was one big hunk, not exactly what we were both expecting. It was decent, but I would not get this the next time around. I would suggest the eggplant or falafel or another more traditional Mediterranean mezze. For entrees, I had the veggie patties platter served w/ lentils and rice ($15) and my friend ordered the shakshuka minus the optional halumi or feta cheese ($12). Both of our entrees were a good size. My dish was excellent and the veggie patties were so flavorful (didn't need any of the accompanied sauces) but the waiter was nice enough to give me both the tomato and tzatziki sauce on the side to try. I was pretty hungry as I hadn't eaten much all day and biked from LES to this location, so I polished off my dish and was very satiated. My friend finished half her entree and took the rest home.
Our friends got a combo of mezzes (3 for $15) and a small Mediterranean pizza ($7). They both said their meal was tasty and satisfying.
For dessert, they were out of the vegan carrot cake, bummer. We then decided on baklava ($7) and malabi ($5). Baklava were three wee small pieces (very adorable presentation), but the flavor was a bit lacking, I would pass on this dessert. Our friends that had the malabi enjoyed it quite a bit, so I would recommend ordering that if dairy is OK with you.
And with the Groupon, plus the dessert, taxes, and tip (should tip the waiter off the original food price), we ended up paying $47 in total. Not a bad deal really.
This is a conveniently located pro-veggie Mediterranean style restaurant with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere (tucked in a lower level). Service was good and food was solid. I don't think you really save that much with the Groupon, but it's an option. I definitely will be back and will also visit the West Village location.
Great little place. Extremely quaint and inventive. It's a gem we stumbled upon after wandering the west side. Loved the vibe inside and the service was fantastic.
This adorable hummus joint is perfect in every way. With a wide menu selection (even some vegan friendly options) and incredible service, it's a must-visit if you're looking to curb your hummus craving. I recommend you asking about the soup of the day, because it's usually something incredible, and I highly, highly recommend both the mushroom hummus and the falafel sandwich. The sandwich comes with a large side of THE best fries (perfectly crispy exterior and pillowy soft interior) that are perfect for sharing. You can alternatively substitute the fries for a salad. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. To top it off, the decor is cute and cozy, setting the perfect mood to enjoy some toasty pitas with hummus. I highly recommend checking this place out.
Disgusting bitter hummus that tastes of canola oil for $30. Needs lemon and some real olive oil, not that cheapo stuff. Could have bought 10 containers of hummus in trader joe's for the money we paid here.
Anyways, never again.
This place rocks! Fantastic place for vegetarian meal with tasty hummus, malawach and salads. We were just visiting NYC but if I were local, I'd go back for sure.
We often stop by this one for quick lunch. Food is absolutely delicious. We have tried their falafels, hummus, zatar pita, almond custard dessert. Food has never disappointed us. Ambience is casual. Staff is courteous. The reason I have picked only 3 stars is bec my overall experience is also dictated by how much I get back for what I pay. The food turns out to be expensive bec quantity is not satisfying.
The entrance is small and the place would be easy to miss if it weren't for the eye catching yellow and brown striped signage. You step down into a lower level entryway and the place has about 36 seats total. Decor is simple inside and you can see part of the kitchen from the main dining area. Place seemed fairly clean and has a restroom, though I didn't use the facilities while I was there.
Staff was kind and helpful, without being overbearing or intrusive. Everyone had a smile and tried to provide assistance if a customer looked lost or like they needed something. A+ for service.
If you want to order takeout, walk straight back to the register and order there. For lunch, they have specials where each entree comes with your choice of mixed greens, hummus, or soup.
Food was tasty– I got the falafel sandwich with hummus as my side ($10 + tax) and it was very filling and well priced, imo! Worth trying.
