“Note: this is by no means a hipster place as you know it's not a hipster neighborhood.”

  1. Did the trick for American Chinese food. Their mooshu chicken and beef + cashews were pretty standard. Service was standard, too.

They serve chocolate fortune cookies at the end! Score!

Pretty predictable. Higher prices than you'd find in Chinatown, of course, but sometimes you really just need some American Chinese.

  2. Had the crispy shrimp and scallops. The shrimp was crispy, the scallops were not. They were chewy. The sauce was pretty good, but the walnuts thrown on top were pointless. Plain walnuts that added nothing to the dish. I might go back if I'm ever in the area, because there is a lot to try

  3. Basic ass Chinese restaurant with over priced Chinese food.

Not worth it unless you wipe your ass with $20 bills.

  4. I've been eating Chinese food a lot lately. Really not sure why.

Anyway, a trip to Riverdale warranted a stroll down their Restaurant Row of Johnson Avenue. The choice was pretty hard to make, there are a lot of promising looking establishments. However, I noticed several pairs. For example, there were two Japanese restaurants and two Chinese restaurants. I'm sure the rivalries must be intense– how they don't edge each other out is beyond me.

The choice this past Sunday night was between J. Jade Dim Sum Cafe and Hunan Balcony. After darting back and forth, the decision was made to go to Hunan, which appeared to be slightly cheaper.

The restaurant is nicely decorated, seems like a Chinese restaurant that has been around for generations. Service is friendly, too.

The menu doesn't go very far beyond take out standards, which is fine, you know– sometimes you want to stay in your comfort zone, and sometimes you want to venture out.

The food is excellent for those that don't want very exotic flavors. It's like take-out, but with far fresher ingredients and intensified tastes. I personally recommend the orange chicken; I didn't order it but a few bites were impressive.

I enjoyed the free oranges and the chocolate fortune cookies at the end.

Brotip: Portions are large. Prepare to share!
