Hunger Pang
NY BK Flatbush
8:30p Saturday 4th June 2016
Five Stars
If this place was in Manhattan, there would be a line around the block. Instead Hunger Pang sits on a quiet street in Flatbush Brooklyn. The place had a constant stream of people but it was never really crowded. We drank Kirin Beer in a can and we snacked on a few appetizers. The Pickle plate had Mama O's Vegan Kimchi, Marinated Sea-Beans, and Szechuan spiced cucumbers ($8). Each had a bit of crunch, a splash of spice, and a light vinegar flavor. The Pork, Chive & Cheddar Dumplings ($8) were amazing. They take your traditional handmade gyoza and then fried with a layer of Sharp Cheddar. Most Asian people don't do diary so the addition of cheese felt deliciously taboo. The salty crispy cheese, tender pork, tangy chives, and a golden brown dumpling wrapper leave you wanting more. The Pangry Wings ($8) had a light and crispy batter. The citrus and salt profile was a nice change from the heavy handed sauces of your traditional wing joints. My friends and I shared a Duck Salad ($17) and the Steak with Salad ($25) and Steak with Fries ($25). However for $3 more you can make them Truffle Fries. The Duck was cooked medium, sliced thinly, and had tons of flavor. The combination of Baby Kale, Watercrest, Shiitake, Bean Sprouts, and the Orange Honey Vinaigrette and Pumpkin Seeds made for a deliciously refreshing salad. The Steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and topped with garlic, lemon, and butter. You really can't ask for anything more. I never expect fries at an asian place but there were crunchy, fatty, and quite enjoyable. We finished the meal with the Banana Split: A scoop of Green Tea, Chocolate, and Vanilla Ice Cream, Caramelized Bananas, Ginger Whipped Cream and topped with chocolate chips, maraschino cherries, and mini umbrella. We usually don't eat too much dessert but we finished the whole thing.
If you are anywhere in the area or looking to try something deliciously different, you should check out Hunger Pang (Just off the Q Train).
This place is consistently good- been here twice and each time, there seems to be new takes and flavors on old classics. For example, their pork fried rice appetizer. I grew up eating this staple and I assumed I've tasted all variations of this dish. Hunger Pang infused some black magic into it that even my boyfriend, who just isn't a fan of fried rice, loved it. They also have this voodoo where they make the roast chicken taste like roast duck. It's madness and I can't wait to see what they try next.
We're new to the area and after living in Cobble Hill for almost two decades the dining choices in Windsor Terrace left us a bit sad and cranky.
That said, Hunger Pang. Good job!
Tofu Bao. Mussels. Salmon. Green tea creme brûlée (lovely, but ours had an over-burnt top). Small but workable wine list.
Friendly staff. Nice decor. Yay!
I was supremely disappointed in this place especially after the reviews were so high. Phone order was hampered by continually having to repeat details for the order with the employee who stated that the restaurant was "very busy and very loud" but when we arrived (from around the corner) there was nobody inside. Ordered three items to go and when we got home not only were they bland but also small portioned and paying 3 bucks for shrimp in the fried ride would have been ok if they didn't give me 3 really small shrimp.
Sad ;(
i truly wanted to like this little restaurant. we came on mother's day – i had wanted to try their regular menu and maybe it was a bad day to come on my part. they had a custom menu for mother's day and just by looking at the dishes listed – i knew they had a tough crowd to please. they attempted to do dimsum but failed miserably. the menu read a lot better than the execution. needless to say, the rating i am giving is fair based on the experience we had. there was no mother's day brunch crowd, surprisingly. we were one of the few tables and they still weren't able to comfortably seat us. granted we didnt have reservations but they were half empty the entire time we dined there brunch. 8 of us jammed into seating meant for 6 or 7. they may also have been slightly understaffed but it was fine. we got water replenished and dishes cleared out promptly enough. we truly came for their regular menu and was disappointed, but i will give them another shot in the near future to see what they are all about.
Great asian fusion style restaurant. Tried a few appetizers and shared them with a friend. We tried the fried shrimp, bao buns, bok choy, and wings. They have two wings on the menu, we tried the classic wings with the citrus green sauce which was unbelievable. The fried shrimp is served with spicy mayo. The bok choy is served with a yummy honey ginger sauce. The bao buns were definitely my favorite here. Will be back for more buns!
I'm usually not a fan of Asian fusion, but Hunger Pang is excellent.
Church Avenue is definitely on the up and up. You can tell when a neighborhood starts having good Asian food instead of chop suey hole-in-the-walls.
The food seems very Chinese inspired, at least in my estimation. They have modern takes on dumplings, fried apps, and seafood.
For starters, we shared the Pangry Wings (fried chicken with a spicy citrus green sauce, which wasn't actually the spicy). Wings were super crispy, and the tangy dipping sauce was great with it. Because you can never have enough fried food, we also did the salt and pepper popcorn shrimp, which came with a spicy mayo dipping sauce. Of the two, I liked that more, but both were great.
For my main, I had the General Guan's Roasted Chicken. It was delicious, but be warned, the portion sizes are gargantuan. It was almost a half chicken, with the crispy skin slathered in honey, and tons of fried garlic chips on top. Because of my aforementioned affinity for fried foods, I went with the side of fries, which were advertised as the best in NY. They were pretty damn good fries. A bit thicker cut than shoestring, and the perfect amount of crispy and fluffy. You can also get them with truffle and parmesan, but even I have my limits.
I also got to try the Pang Fried Noodles with 12 hour pork. That was their take on pan fried noodles, which is a staple of Chinese food. It was pretty good, and again, the portion size was huge!
All in all, I was a big fan of Hunger Pang and am looking forward to returning and trying some of their more adventurous offerings!
What a delightful restaurant. Came here at 5pm when they first open. The service was great, the waiter made a lot of wonderful suggestions. The dishes are small so if you come here with one other person make sure to share a bunch of dishes. We got the fried shrimp and they were amazing! The shrimp come with these garlic flakes that I want to eat all the time! The spicy mayo is also a perfect match for the shrimp. Then we had the pulled pork buns. Oh man so yummy especially with the refreshing pickles it comes with. We also had the corn on the cob, so refreshing! Juicy corn with yummy cheese!!! Then we had the Asian wings, a little bit spicy but just the perfect amount. We finished off dinner with the doughnuts. The caramel sauce was really yummy and the doughnuts were so fresh. Strongly recommend this place and I will be back as well!
