  1. Came here for dinner this past Saturday. Where most of the other nice and highly rated restaurants in the area had an hour or so wait, Hunter's had one two seater left open when we walked in. Hunter's is a casual restaurant (and bar) but the prices and quality of the food is higher than just an average restaurant ($20-30 entrees & mostly $7 beers). With the exception of our check coming before being offered dessert or coffee or another round of drinks the service was friendly and attentive. I may not make Hunter's a regular stop for dinner but was very satisfied with my meal and wouldn't hesitate to come back in the future.

I had their braised beef entree ($28) which came with a farro risotto and pumpkin and my fiance got the sweet potato and ricotta gnocchi in a goat cheese sauce ($20) and we shared a side of brussel sprouts with bacon and peanuts ($6). Overall we were incredibly happy with our meals, everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Portions weren't small but weren't so big that there were leftovers either. I didn't happen to see or taste any pumpkin in my dish nor did I taste or see or taste any peanuts in the side dish and the sprouts could have been cooked a bit longer with a bit more char on them (same with the bacon). As a dessert we "split" (ok mostly just me) had the Nutella bread pudding. This was excellent though if they had a couple cold sliced strawberries on top to cut down the sweetness and balance the flavor and hot temperature it would have been even better. No doubt it was a great meal though, definitely worthy of 4 stars.

  2. I stopped by Hunter's last night for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The menu seemed a bit rich (but I guess it's now fall, after all…) but the food we received was delicious and didn't leave me feeling heavy. I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere which was not too crowded, too loud, or too dim. Just the right amount… 🙂

I got the polenta and mushroom side (delish!), the bibb salad (pretty good). My friends got the mushroom potpie (meh. Not a lot of mushrooms and the crust was more like a bicuit placed on top of the filling…) and the lox (tasty!)

As the weather turns cooler, I suspect we'll be back for another dinner.

  3. Those that know me, know that I love the Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill area so naturally I'd be ecstatic to have a birthday dinner here. I chose Hunter's because it fit the bill and had a reservation open on Yelp. (Thanks Yelp!)

There is a large table at the back of the restaurant. Could've easily sat up to 12-13 I think. The service was alright, weird at times. At the beginning our server kept trying to take our order when we said we needed a few minutes, but once we ordered we weren't really attended to. It was relatively non-busy around 7pm on a Saturday, so that was interesting as well. The food took a while to come, but I'm not sure if that's because one person in our party arrived a little late so they waited to bring it out altogether.

I had the burger, creamed kale side, and a cocktail called the white something…I forget. Do not get the cream kale side. It was very small and salty, and not really sure what the purpose of it is? It kind of tasted like spinach artichoke dip. My friends seemed to be quite pleased with their dishes, so that is a positive. They have a limited dessert menu.

I would recommend for large groups if you can get the table in the back.

  4. Came here for a friend's birthday, and they were able to accommodate our large party in the back table.

Service was weirdly pushy when we first got there, and we had to keep asking for more time as we decided what we wanted to order. Then once our food came, service was nonexistent…

I ordered the duck pappardelle pasta, and it was great! A nice big portion, with great flavors. The pasta was tender, the sauces went well, and the duck had a perfect chewy and tender consistency.

The place was completely empty when we came at 7, but was quickly filled by 8PM.

  5. I came here for weekday brunch & of course there was no issue getting a table since everybody was at work. Win win!

But I'm not gonna lie, was a bit disappointed w/ the food quality at Hunter's… The chicken was MIA from my friend's chicken leg hash. And I'm pretty sure the description of my farmer's basket said croutons but where they at, bro?! 🙁 My bowl was also a bit too oily & it definitely did not taste like "vinaigrette"…

I did, however, like the Nutella bread pudding. It had more of a pudding consistency & I could taste the ribbons of Nutella spread. Yummay!!

    Overall, I'd give Hunters a 3.5…

  6. Hunter's is a delicious neighborhood spot! I'm knocking one star only because they have a B rating, and that stuff kind of freaks me out. However with that said, Hunter's deserves a try if you haven't been!

I've stopped in for dinner and brunch and both were great experiences. I've had dinner tucked away in the back, and brunch at the bar, and received attentive service in both areas.

Dishes I can vouch for: mussels, beef tartare, brussel sprouts, truffle fries, grilled kale salad, farmer's basket (brunch), seasonal omelet (brunch). If you're here for brunch definitely get the cucumber mimosa but ask for light on the simple syrup.

  7. When you get pancakes, what do you like to put on them?

    Syrup, you say?

What temperature do you like your syrup to be?

Wait, what was that, not ice-cold-right-out-of-the-fridge-fogging-up-in-the-warm-air? Why would you not want cold syrup?

Yeah, so that happened when I was there in December, and the staff was somewhat huffy about warming it up past freezing. It was weird.

Other food items were unremarkable. Food sounded better on the menu than it tasted!

  8. Spacious, good brunch food, good service …. but probably overshadowed by its neighbor across the street, Cafe Luluc. Even with that said, their brunch menu was diverse and our group really enjoyed our experience here. In other words, they more than held their own!

I found Hunter's on a random Yelp search when I was looking for a brunch restaurant in Brooklyn that accepted brunch time reservations and could accommodate a large group. On Opentable, Hunter's only accepted a reservation for up to 10 people, but they were kind enough to accommodate 2 more additional people when we all arrived. In addition, the staff was very accommodating as our party of 12 filtered in slowly, a few at a time.

We were seated at an elevated table in the back of the restaurant, which had bar stools as seats. It was actually a sweet location in the restaurant because we had our own little private section. There was plenty of space and we didn't feel cramped at all.

As for the menu, although they served the usual brunch food, such as, eggs benedict, pancakes, french toast, omelet, they also expanded it out to include a burger, sandwich and fish and chips. After scanning thru numerous Yelp photos, I settled on the Angus Beef Burger along with about half of the table.

After inspecting all of the burger photos, it was to no surprise of mine that the burger was extremely juicy when I bit into it! You know it's a kick-ass burger when the juices are dripping out as you take a big ol' chomp into it! It was as juicy as it was tasty. Also, the burger wasn't overwhelmingly huge, but just big enough where it filled me up. As for the side of fries, they were good too, but I wished they would've gave a bit more. The portioning of that was a bit underwhelming.

Our table also decided to order the Elvis French Toast, as a shared item, after we saw a waiter deliver it to a table. The French Toast was as big as the photos made it look! It definitely isn't your Momma's sliced French Toast! The French Toast was huge and had peanut butter stuffed inside with sliced bananas and pecans on top. Although it looked delicious, it lacked a bit of flavor. There just wasn't enough peanut butter stuffed inside. Also, if you don't get a piece of the French Toast where there is peanut butter, then the bread will be surprisingly a bit flavorless. The French Toast is a novel idea, but it definitely has room for improvement.

To be honest, I didn't expect such a great experience here, but our group had a great time. The service, accommodations in the back table and the food made it a really good brunch time. We really couldn't ask for anything more.
