  1. Last year I think I found the greatest ice cream in NJ when we stopped at Nasto's in Newark (yep, bold statement- but if you try it you'll be hooked), but I am ALWAYS looking for a place to knock them off the pedastal.  After a hot dog run for lunch today in Carlstadt, we needed to top it off with some ice cream.

A co-worker grew up in this area and thought this would be a great place for me to try.  He's been here a LOT over the years (we seem to share an affinity for delicious, yet unhealthy, food), but I was a Charlie's virgin until today.  I'll admit, the ice cream was really good, but isn't going to take over as top dog in the North Jersey ice cream wars (really just a battle going on with my taste buds).

The girl behind the counter was very nice and greeted us before we were all the way into the store.  After checking out the flavors I decided on a two-scoop cup of Salted Caramel Vanilla and plain Chocolate.  Getting chocolate ice cream will tell you a lot about an ice cream place and Charlie's does it right.  Nice strong chocolate flavor, but balanced enough to blend with, rather than overwhelm, the other flavor in your cup.  The salted caramel was very good, but needed just a touch more saltiness to bring it together for the perfect scoop.  The combo was great, but just off a tiny bit.

I don't live in the area, but the next time I'm here I KNOW I have another place to sneak some ice cream!

  2. Good and cheap ice cream. I love soft serve. I got vanilla soft serve with crunchies, because I also like crunchies. The shop has a little seating, along with some interesting items. I saw a shovel and pail full of ice cream for sale that I was seriously considering buying just for fun. Maybe bring it to the beach and eat some ice cream before playing with sand.

The local high school age kids behind the counter seemed friendly enough. I saw the nutella chocolate chunk ice cream, which sounded amazing, so I ordered some. It was amazing. It tasted like I was eating a lighter nutella. When I drank the melted part on the bottom, it tasted like straight nutella.

Support your local ice cream shops, they're better than the chains.

  3. 3.5 stars for a good local ice cream shop. My mint cookie crumble (I forget the real name) was really good, although I tried the red velvet also, which was disappointing.

The young girl in charge was actually quite good despite her age, and was doing a great job helping customers while training a new staff member.

    Cash only. Large portions.

  4. I'm addicted! I grew up in Rutherford, so I have been coming here for years, and I absolutely love it. Their ice cream and milkshakes are the bomb. Homemade ice cream, friendly staff, and clean facilities. There is another ice cream place just down the block, and I would choose Ice Cream Charlie's over that place any day. It is a little pricey for one scoop, but one scoop is about 3 scoops, so you won't be disappointed. My absolute favorite is the Mint Chocolate Chip, but there are a variety of flavors to choose from. I seriously have not had better Mint Chocolate chip anywhere else, and I LOVE ice cream.

Come here with the family, friends, by yourself… no matter what, you'll leave satisfied and smiling from ear-to-ear, with a guilty yearning to come back again tomorrow.

  5. This is a place I will come to from now on for my ice cream fix.  You can taste the quality here, it's all home made for sure.  Hence the prices.  I got a kiddie cone soft serve with sprinkles on it for $3.46…A kiddie size is perfect…. I can't imagine how much you get in a small.  You just have to try this place to see what the hype is all about… I love small businesses like this who are making it big.  Go out and support them… You won't be sorry!

  6. Great little ice cream shop that makes their own ice cream and does it well.  Nice and creamy, not too sweet, and great flavors, definitely going to be our go to ice cream shop.

So far I've tried the chocolate raspberry truffle, chocolate chip cookie dough, coffee, chocolate peanut butter, and cookies and cream (nice to bring the family and be able to try all they ice cream they ordered!). I have to say, the cookies and cream was by far my favorite. Perfect amount of cookies and a great tasting vanilla base makes their cookies and cream one if the best I've ever had!

  7. As a loyal DQ fan (hate all you want), I've always neglected coming here in favor of a Blizzard, however, Saturday night marked my first, and definitely not last, visit to Ice Cream Charlie's.  The store itself is small with a few tables and there was no line around 9:00 PM.  After sampling a few flavors, I settled on Pistachio and Coconut Chip with almonds.  The Pistachio was uhhhhhhhhmazing.  Incredibly creamy with a perfect buttery and nutty pistachio flavor.  I also sampled the Chocolate Raspberry Truffle and Coffee which were both very good.  They offer cakes with hard ice cream and I would love to try one of those and come back for the rice krispies ice cream!!

  8. Ice Cream Charlie's has the best ice cream I ever had. My ideal ice cream is creamy but not too heavy. Their ice cream is a lot less heavy than Coldstone's ice cream and more heavy than Baskin Robin's ice cream. Ice Cream Charlie's has ice cream with the perfect consistency.

Have trouble deciding what flavor to get? Ask for samples. I had the pistachio ice cream. It was the best tasting pistachio ice cream I ever had. It has chunks of pistachio in it. I also tried the banana nut flavor and that was just as great as the pistachio one. The banana nut ice cream has a couple of nuts in it. I had a tough time choosing what flavor to get, but pistachio won. For only $5, I got a huge amount of ice cream on a wafer cone. It's big enough to share.

They don't accept credit cards. Cash only.
