  1. I can't believe I ventured this far uptown for my friend's poetry reading. I don't think I've ever been to Harlem, but it was definitely a fun adventure I won't soon forget.

The poetry reading was held at this tiny cafe, and I'm glad I got to experience it. When my friend and I arrived, I was starving, and she really wanted a glass of wine. I was worried that the cafe wouldn't have anything vegan friendly, but the waitress told me I could eat the black bean soup and a salad. I said, "sounds good to me!" My friend was able to get a glass of red wine.

We sat on the first floor to enjoy our food/drink and enjoyed the bustling yet cozy atmosphere. My only complaint is that the space is really drafty, and I was freezing my buns off. Upstairs, where the reading was held, was even more chilly, and I never took my coat off.

The food was just okay. Mostly, I was just happy to be able to have SOMETHING to eat because I had been so hungry. The black bean soup was a little watery, and the salad wasn't anything remarkable.

I really like the space upstairs. It's filled with interesting and eye-catching art. I don't know the neighborhood very well, but it seems like a little gem within it. Probably if I lived nearby, I would frequent Il Caffe Latte.

  2. The food is really good and the setting as great. The coffee is full body and will wake up a mummy. I ate here for breakfast and got exactly what I was hoping for, but I do thing it's a little over pricey but it's New York right. The food is very heavy, I wasn't hungry again till early evening.

If your looking for a place to chilly, great coffee, or a good meal. By all means this spot was it.

  3. My companion and I were strolling around Harlem and realized that it was already hours past lunch time. But we were hungry, so we decided to check out this place.

Since we were in between mealtimes, we just opted to get a large soup; I ordered the chicken curry soup, while he ordered the French onion soup. They were both delicious and great for the purpose they served. The serving size was large enough that we were both satisfied.

I probably would have given this place just 3 stars, but I opted to try a peanut butter cookie and loved it, so I am giving them an extra star. The staff was also very helpful and friendly, and explained to us what baked goods they had.

I don't end up finding myself in this neighborhood too often, but if I do, I won't mind stepping in again and getting myself another cookie.

  4. This place is ridiculously whimsical and well designed. It's like going into Granny's brownstone revamped by hippies. They serve a wide selection of paninis, pastas, salads, and brunch options. Plus all the coffees, teas, and related cakes/ pastries. All the staff is really attentive and nice, which just makes the whole thing a lot more pleasant (take note, Silvana's). And it's in the food desert of 145 West, which is huge. the only thing they really need to change is the name. Caffe Latte is lame, and the 2 is just plain corny. Please rebrand!

  5. This new cafe is tucked into a brownstone just West of Convent Ave on 145th Street. It has the same menu as the original Il Caffe Latte on Lenox Ave, which is extensive but pricey for Hamilton Heights (sandwiches/panini are $10.50+, oatmeal is $5, omelet is $9, etc). I just got a cafe au lait, which was ok. It tasted just like the one I made when I discovered my mother's frother–mostly coffee with hot milk, with thin foam on the top. I sipped slowly and took advantage of the fast wifi and general emptiness to get some work done. Note: not a quiet spot, even though there weren't many people. There were assorted clangs and it has a diner feel so people talked pretty loudly.

The second floor was beautiful, but not yet open. The first floor feels a bit awkwardly set up and the decor doesn't seem cohesive, but it's brand new so everything is clean and the staff are super friendly. There's patio space in the back, which I hope will be open before it's too cold to sit outside.

The take-away: Il Caffe Latte is a nice alternative to Cafe One if you want elbow room (or fancier food). And if you're you're going all the way to The Chipped Cup for wifi rather than really good coffee, try out Caffe Latte: no 2 hour limit, no worry about finding a table, and fewer distractingly beautiful people.

  6. A nice little hidden treasure in the Harlem/Ham Heights area.  4 stars because the seating/tables are pretty tight, but there are two separate areas: the downstairs seems mostly for light orders or if you're visiting solo, while the upstairs is arranged for parties of 2 or more.  The setup is adorable; it feels like you truly are in someone's home for coffee and brunch.  Friendly/attentive service and just the right amount of white noise to encourage conversation.  I had the blueberry whole wheat pancakes, and I couldn't have been happier.

    Thanks, Il Caffe Latte!
