Il Bagatto – To Go

“I can't wait to try Il Posto Accanto next door (same owners)!”

“Only drawback is that they take cash or AMEX- which is fine with me and not always fine with everyone.”

  1. Started with moscato down at the bar then went upstairs for dinner. Had the vegetarian and meat platters for appetizers. Then had pasta with seafood, pasta with shrimp, and arrabiato.

For dessert, tried tiramisu, nonna and hazelnut.  All tasty.

Servers were attentive and helpful. Always refilling our glasses. And evenly spaced courses.

Cash only so come prepared. Enjoy ur meal!

  2. Wow, there are so many things wrong with this place, where do I begin?  There specials have no prices listed.  I ordered the calamari, and when comparing it to the regular menu, I figured that it would be around $10-$12 (since that's what the appetizers cost on the main menu).  Wrong.  $16.50 and five dinky pieces of grilled calamari later, I was starving.

Over twenty minutes passed (actually closer to thirty) from the time our appetizers were cleared to when our entrees landed on the table.  I ordered some seafood ravoli.  When the food runner asked if we wanted grated Parmesan, I simply repsonded, "Yes, please."  NO, SORRY NOT FOR YOU MA'AM.  You ordered seafood pasta, no cheese for you!  What are you, a freakin' cheese nazi?  And, do you really have to yell at me so other patrons think I'm some crazy pig.  I asked again if I could get a spoonful.  He yelled again and said, "NO I WILL GET IN TROUBLE!"

What kind of rule is this?  So strange.

The pasta was shit.  I couldn't taste the seafood.  The sauce was too tart.  If only I had some damn Parmesan.

Everything about this place was incredibly awful.

I asked three times for more olive oil for the bread.  Did we ever receive it?  Nope.   When I asked for recommendations, the response to every dish, "That's good."

When we asked for our check, the server left and said it was going to be a few minutes.  They have the hostess upstairs hand calculating, so make sure you check it for mistakes.

My friend wanted to add on an after-dinner cocktail, after we had asked for the check.  So sorry, but you're shit out of luck, because the check "Is already being calculated."

I wish restaurants like this would die.  Oh, and the decor was so tacky.

  3. I really liked it here. I felt like the environment, and the food was very authentic. I came for a friend's birthday, and there were about 15 of us. They have a bigger room downstairs, and we were able to reserve a table on a Tuesday night. We had the downstairs to ourselves, so it was really nice.

We started with a few bottles of wine, and they had a huge selection, which was great. I tried the bruchetta, which was definitely great tasting, I have just probably had better. I also had the antipasto salad which was honestly amazing. The flavors and mix of items on the dish made it a great starter. For dinner, I had the lemon chicken. While I prefer boneless chicken, this had great flavor and was a HUGE plate, so I had to take some home. Dessert was my favorite part of the meal. I wish I could remember any of the desserts we ordered, but there was one that was covered with chocolate on the outside, and had a hard vanilla icecream on the inside. It melted in your mouth, so if you're at this place, find that on the menu…. whatever it may be called.

I can imagine this is great for a date, good for a group, and decent for a classy glass of wine whilst catching up with a friend. I'd definitely go back!

  4. Originally we were suppose to go to Supper, but there was such a long wait, we decided to come here instead. Great food. I got something simple, like  lasagna and it was delicious. We also ordered a bottle of wine, that was good as well. Service is pretty good. Would recommend friends here if they're craving Italian in the East Village (Little Italy is overrated).

  5. When my friend Katie referred me to this place, I was excited because as an Italian, I tend to enjoy the food of my people. Ashamedly, when I went to Yelp this place, the negative reviews made me a little nervous. For the love of God, don't let the negative reviews make you a little nervous. I am usually one of those critical people, but when everything is orchestrated so perfectly as it was at Il Bagatto, its incredibly hard to complain.

It is small, as another reviewer mentioned but I never felt cramped or uncomfortable because of it, and I'm no fan of confined spaces. It was actually really homey and invited conversations between tables. In fact, we started talking to the table next to us and we learned they were from Baton Rouge near where I live! So awesome.
The staff was very friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the manager couldn't have been nicer, even offering to move us away from the breezy door after we were seated (bonus points for that).

Now for the important part: THE FOOD.
If you do not start with the calamari, you are a crazy person. It is grilled with a sprinkle of lemon and it is outrageous. You won't miss it being fried in the least because you can actually TASTE the calamari instead of breading! Imagine that!
My sister got the Baby Back Ragu and I got the Gnocchi with Gorgonzola and Spinach and both got better by the bite. The Gnocchi was, in the words of Mike Myers in drag, "like a stick of butta". Creamy, melt in your mouth, with the slightest bite from the gorgonzola. And YES, THEY ASKED IF WE WANTED PARMESAN ON TOP. The only dish they will not serve with parmesan is the seafood pasta because they are so proud of this dish, they don't want you to overcheese it.
For dessert, Limoncello and Ricotta Cheesecake. We had never tried the cheesecake before and it was perfection. Super mild, yet the same texture as regular cream cheese cheesecake.

DO NOT miss this place if you live in/are visiting New York City because I can't imagine there being better Italian food anywhere else, other than maybe Italy itself.

  6. what we ate: grilled calamari, burrata, short rib papparadelle, branzino, and chicken special

i'll start by saying that based on all the great reviews on yelp, i was pretty disappointed. i found this to be a very average east village / alpha city italian joint that turned out to be quite overpriced.

the food: okay all around. the burrata was delicious but a smaller portion than i have found other places priced comparably. grilled calamari was also good but a small enough portion that we had to order 2 to split between 4 people to go along with the burrata. i had the short rib pasta which was very salty (and i like a heavy salting but this was really intense). the branzino was a bit bland and while i appreciated the ease of the filet style it didnt have the same effect as getting a nice whole grilled fish. i didnt try the chicken so no comment there.

the price: what happened? we were all surprised when our bill came. so ill summarize to say DO NOT assume that the specials list is priced anything like their main menu. the specials list is about 9-10 items long (almost as big as their regular menu). and while you would assume that some spectacular sounding specials might be a bit higher priced than the rest of their menu, i would not assume such an extensive second menu style specials list would all be much higher priced (which they make you assume by not listing any prices). i was shocked to see the chicken breast special was $30+ as was the fish, while the apps were both ~$20. compared to their reg menu where apps are ~$10 and mains are ~$15-22 this was a very unpleasant surprise. we ended up dropping $50 pp without alcohol , 1 main pp, and 3 shared apps. too much for this area and this genre if you ask me!

service was ok. ambiance was ok. one random thing worth nothing is that towards the middle of our pleasant low key dinner, 2 guys came out of the bar area in the back cradle carrying a girl who was unconscious. completely blacked out. a fire truck and ambulance ended up coming to get her right outside the restaurant a few minutes later so we had red flashing lights to complement the christmas lights lit ambiance. i have no idea what was going on in that back room but this was at about 9 pm on a Tuesday night. not exactly what i expect, or want, to observe during my casual dinner.

overall while everything was ok, there are too many other delicious and better priced italian options in this neighborhood to bother with coming back. unless i want to get wasted and pass out in the back room that is…

  7. Really enjoyed this place tonight!
Came here with my daughter. Good service, very good food and reasonable prices.
We had three appetizers; a bean dish, a salad and grilled octopus. All very good and the grilled octopus was the highlight. We were full after the appetizers and great bread basket.
We then shared sninach gnocchi with bolognese sauce. The sauce was delicious and the gnocchi was light but not as fluffy as I have had in other places…but no complaints. Very good.
Nice atmosphere. And for about $60 with a glass of wine, a very good value!

  8. Went here last night with the brother and the fiance.  The conversation circled around the benefits of owning a 7-11 or Subway restaurant shops before it settled down into potential baby names.  I remember my conversations and this restaurant being better the last time I went a few years ago.

    We ordered the following dishes:

    Appetizers:
-The salami and mozzarella special (5 stars): Best thing I ate all day. Superb, we saw a bunch of other tables around us order this dish so hopped on the bandwagon.
-Grilled Calamari (3 stars): I enjoyed it very much in that it gets rid of the fried bits of the standard calamari you get at a typical restaurant.  The light flavors were also a pleasantry.
-Bruschetta (3 stars): Given to us for free since we waited over an hour to get a table.  Standard bruschetta.

    Dinner:

-Tortellini Bolognese: I didn't try so can't rank it.  My brother ate the entire dish and said it was quite tasty.  He also ate only one tortellini at a time I presume to slow down the pace of his eating.  He also avoided the meat sauce because he likes meat and he likes sauce but the combination scares him.  We will omit a score rating for this for now.
-Rigatoni with sausage ragu (2.5 stars): This was off the specials menu which is significantly higher priced than the regular menu.  The fiance found it to be really underwhelming.  They ran out of oxtail so switched it with sausage yet still charged the special price.  There was only 3 baby pieces of sausage.
-Spinach gnocchi with the bleu cheese sauce (3.5 stars): Very good but it would have been nice to have a sharper bleu cheese flavor.

Overall, the food is good but if I am around the area I would rather venture to Supper at the other end of the street.
