About damn time Imperial Egg had their own Yelp page! Their reviews have been falling under the Smorgasburg listing which is unfair IMO. Gotta take your own credit and bask in your glory, my little eggies.
I saw enough yolk porn from Instagram that I knew I had to make my way out to Smorgasburg for their eggs. I've never had scotch eggs but the moment I saw these babies I knew. This. Was. It. The one and only thing I'd want to eat for the rest of my life for breakfast, scotch eggs.
I'm a huuuge egg connoisseur, deviled, poached, benedict, throw it at me and I'll eat it or I've already had it that way. But this, scotch eggs? I've never had it and as an avid carnivore I couldn't be more pleased at the idea of a ball of meat was encasing the precious poached egg. Oh and did I mention the whole thing is the size of a baseball and it's deep fried?! *insert applause*
You see, Imperial Egg is different in the sense that their eggs are not your traditional scotch eggs. The inside is poached and it's served warm. They have about 3 – 4 different flavors of how you can have your egg served to you. Bacon and cheese? Chorizo? Japanese Soy Glazed? Lamb Merguez? There's no way you won't be able to find a selection you don't like. I've had all 4 flavors and my favorite will always be the lamb. The chorizo comes in second.
I've done a fair amount of research on where else I can find scotch eggs in NYC and my only option was an English pub in Brooklyn. I can tell you now that it's no where near as good as the ones at Imperial Egg. Heck it wasn't even poached or warm, it was served cold!! I asked one of the owners how does he have the egg poached and the meat deep fried, his reply " That's my secret." Anddddd that's exactly why I keep coming back.
My only complaint is that these guys don't have their own brick and mortar yet, scotch eggs are seriously the best thing that's ever happened to NYC. It really sucks that I've gotta wait till the weekends to get my scotch egg fix but hey that's what makes the weekend all the better right?
I wish the owners and the team behind Imperial Egg, the best of luck and I look forward to a permanent spot in a year!
Seriously living up to it's name, these eggs are royalty!
I don't know what happened…did I come on an off day? Did I just get a dud? All in all, I was sadly disappointed in Imperial Eggs.
I love scotch eggs and have been sorely craving the ones I used to get in London. That said, I was beyond excited when I went to Smorgasburg and saw Imperial Egg's stand. They recommended the Lamb Merguez, which comes with a yogurt based sauce. I love lamb, so I was game. The presentation was great, although very sauce-heavy: oozy golden yolks and golden, fried casing on a bed of greens.
Upon first bite I felt a bit "meh." But I figured it was just the first bite and maybe I had gotten too much sauce or not enough egg. After getting through half the egg, I was pretty sad. The scotch egg did nothing to satisfy my craving, and I couldn't quite pinpoint why. In fact, I didn't even feel like finishing it (very, very rare for me). Although the casing was well-fried and crunchy and the egg yolks were perfectly cooked, there was something off about the lamb. I suspect it may have been undercooked, but regardless, there was an odd gamey-ness. That and I didn't think the yogurt sauce was doing it any favors.
Overall: Not sure…I feel like maybe it was just a fluke, but for now, it's a solid no from me.
