There is nothing like finding people that are passionate about what they do. Even better is when you find people passionate about producing quality Vodka in unique, new ways.
For the second time in one week, I ventured down the R line into a neighborhood unknown to me. After a quick walk from 36th station we arrived at a great old industrial road paved in cobblestone. (Side note: the chocolate maker (li-lac) has given the road a lovely scent when you walk past!) Once inside we had to hike up to the 6th floor (huffhuffhuff) and entered the distillery. The walls are lined with pallets ready to ship and machinery innards line every shelf. The tour begins in a large room with views of lower Manhattan and the statue of liberty. We are given an adorable beaker shot glass with their beet sugar based vodka and the talk begins. The tour guides are very friendly and clever people. If something is too expensive or unobtainable, they make it and remake it and remake it until it suits their needs. They started with No 1, No 2 and No 3. They were made in 200 bottle batches as they experimented with flavor profiles. Then came Industry Standard. For a girl that isn't keen on straight vodka, it had a clean flavorful taste and barely any burn. They made a fantastic Lemon cello while on the tour and we were able to grab a taste of that before heading out.
This tour was thoroughly enjoyable. I love learning about small businesses that are fun and passionate about their work. They are willing to answer any questions and love when people ask. Plus you're welcome to take pictures (#drinkICD if sharing them online). I'm so glad that I was able to participate in this tour and taste a great new vodka. Sadly they cannot sell anything in house but if you go to their website you can purchase online or find a store in the borough near you!
((Review for the Yelp Brooklyn Born event hosted by ICD))
Came here this weekend to participate in some philanthropic efforts (ie. Bottling party to help Industry City Distillery wash, label, pour, cap, seal and package their signature and technical reserve vodkas!) – it was a truly fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon with friends.
Ronak, Dave and Brandon (co-founders/employees) are all super cool guys who are very passionate about their products and clearly put a lot of heart into the delicious vodkas they produce.
After the bottling was over Dave made us cocktails (2 parts vodka, 1 part vermouth and a thai herb leaves) that were super refreshing, very smooth and had some bite at the end. They also ordered tacos. DAMN. Can't get better than cocktails and tacos.
I really love ICD's space. It's really an ideal spot to spend an afternoon basking in tons of natural light and enjoying some delicious, Brooklyn-made adult libations. Definitely check this place out, you won't regret it :).
This is what you imagine when you think of what a Brooklyn Distillery and Bar in a co-working warehouse would look like. Really cool feel, great drinks, and amazing view! Came in one day after working at Brooklyn Flea, had no idea it was even there! Drinks are amazing, although they take some time to make – they are worth the wait! Truly crafting a unique cocktail! Will definitely be back after another trip to Brooklyn Flea.
Came here for the tour with Mr. Joy a couple of months ago. We were embarrassingly late due to annoying train delays. But ICD still made us feel welcome and handed us our complimentary beakers with vodka. I was getting over a sore throat and probably shouldn't have been drinking at the time. But, maybe the vodka kills the germs, and ergo rids the virus, no?
Anyways, the tour is $5/person. They are very casual, open, and friendly and don't seem too strict to check payment.
I had learned quite a bit (despite missing almost half the tour) about their beet sugar vodka and their patented enviro-friendly way of processing liquor. I wish their methods could be extended to other distilleries so the distilling industry could be more resource-conscious as a whole. But I understand that ICD needs to protect their investment, their business as well as their inventions.
After the tour, we tried some of the drinks. I got my usual drink of choice, a vodka soda. We also got some empanadas and pulled pork sliders. The cat on the premises is cute and friendly. But sadly, it was a little too eager to eat our food. I guess now we know who is the real boss of ICD. Still, I enjoyed the tour. The space is very inviting and comfortable with a nice view.
Industry City Distillery is a bit hard to find. I was drunk so I can't really give you more detailed directions, but there was an elevator involved. And possibly the number 6. 6th floor? Who knows.
Came here for the tasting room because at this point, I can't do distillery tours anymore. They're all the same story (we wanted to make whiskey, but had to start with vodka and/or gin to cover costs during aging, etc. etc.) and you never retain anything because you're just waiting to get drunk afterward.
That said, the space is really cool. There's a corner window with panoramic views of Manhattan. There's a few tables, and two bars.
And of course, there's the drinks. Not sure if I just ordered wrong, but the first drink I got (a warm gin drink with lemon) straight up tasted like medicine. It was called the Chilly Bee. Don't get that one.
My second drink was decidedly better. It was called the Funkrust, which may or may not be a reference to one of the bands who regularly plays here. Brown sugar, vanilla and gin make a fine combination.
Speaking of bands, something that was good in theory was their "Brass Tacks" music series, with live brass bands. However, in practice, having a dude playing a giant loud tuba makes it so you have to yell at people sitting two feet away from you. Had to leave when we realized we could only have a conversation in between songs.
But hey, I've had their vodka and gin before at other events, and I know they make great stuff. So they at least have that going for them.
Came here for a tour & was super impressed by the innovative spirit (ha! no pun intended!) of ICD. Highly recommended.
I initially heard about Industry City Distillery from where else but Yelp. It was over a year ago at one of those 'Brooklyn Born' events that try to both inform you about start up businesses in Brooklyn and entertain you at the same time. It was pretty entertaining as I love vodka and they gave us a private tour of the place along with a mini taste of their product. It's one of the more unique and drinkable vodkas I've ever tasted in my life and has made me a fan of sugar beets and science. Also, that event put me on their mailing list and gave me one of the greatest experiences ever of coming in every few months for a bottling party! Yes, in my spare time I bottle vodka on weekends. It gives you a great sense of the effort and work that goes into a distillery.
The owners – Ronak and Dave are super friendly. There is even a house vodka kitty, named Scratchy. She is adorable! Though, more importantly, the views from here are absolutely spectacular and they have a tasting room that recently just reopened this summer. I've had the pleasure of trying their martinis and their Dr. Ellison (cucumber infused) cocktail, as well as a fernet they made in house. Every cocktail was expertly crafted and outstanding. Also, noticed they are a fan of Puerto Rico and Piragua, which is a shaved ice desert.
Industry City Distillery is quite the gem in Sunset Park. The kind of gem that you don't want too many people to find out about. I saw a few of my Yelp friends check into this place so I had to check it out for myself since it's in the neighborhood.
The space is open to the public Fridays and Saturday evenings from 4-10pm. We came on a Friday evening around 7:30 just in time for the spectacular views of the sunset. I was afraid that the place would be absolutely crowded but it wasn't. There was a decent amount of people but it wasn't like we were standing on top of each other.
Their menu offered some speciality cocktails. I had The Bee Sting because I've been obsessed with limoncello recently and that's one of the ingredients in the cocktail. The drinks were delicious and the service was top notch! Super friendly, knowledgable, and speedy. They even came around with some complimentary pieces of bread pudding which we thought was the sweetest gesture. We will definitely be returning for the drinks, kind service, and wonderful atmosphere!
