Istanbul Grill
“this is one of the few turkish middle eastern places that i eat the salad that comes with the platter.”
“Made for the perfect munchy for our walk on Highline.”
“only downside is that if you're vegan, ask them not to heat the pita up on the grill–it ends up tasting a little like the meat that's also cooked on it.”

I was starving and walking around for hours looking for something quick, came here and figured the chicken donner would be dry so went with the lamb/beef. There was almost no flavor, not really sure how you can acheve that, and the hot sauce was pretty much water down ketchup.
This place was pretty good. Food was definitely decent on a late night after drinking food binge. I had babaganoush salad with pita. I would go back.
It did have this strangely haunting vibe to it, since the adjacent dining room was not lit… only the main takeout side was lit up. But I grabbed a table anyway.
Great service and delicious food. I had the chef's choice and loved it.
Restaurant is probably a 3 overall but since it's a late night alternative to pizza, they get the extra bonus star.
Pros: Open late, who doesn't love Mediterranean food and good prices.
Cons: Wouldn't be my first choice for great Mediterranean.
Overall: Cool place good price.
How is it that I never visited this place before?
Yesterday we were looking for a place after the Pride march, and my husband was insisting he wanted meat. All jokes aside, I checked the phone and this place came up as a good choice.
There's a little bit of outdoor seating but after marching in the hot sun, we decided to sit in the air conditioned dining room. This place is small but extremely clean. The waitress was very pleasant, brought us the menus right away, and brought us drinks.
The Cigar Borat appetizers were delicious! The feta cheese was melted perfectly. We also had a plate of the delicious hummus, which really hit the spot.
For our late lunch/early dinner I had the lamb gyro (donair) which was chock full of seasoned meat. My daughter had the chicken gyro, and my husband had the kofta sandwich, which he loved.
We held off on dessert because the kid wanted ice cream, and we figured we'd head down to the Pride fair. In retrospect we probably should have stayed at Istanbul Grill. The baklava looked inviting and they did have ice cream on the menu.
They get extra points for having a clean, working bathroom – a rarity in that area. That much food for well under 50? I'm happy.
I'll definitely be back.
Fighting my monthly malaise, and fiending for shish I headed over to the venerable Istanbul Grill on 14th. Street. This place has been around forever and haven't eaten here in many moons. It was quiet at lunch and altough the doners on the spit, looked dripping with goodness, I ordered the shish kebab sandwich for $6.50. The waiter brought over hot sauce and my fave yogurty garlicky concoction. The sandwich was served on a fresh pita with lettuce and tomato. The lamb was cooked perfectly less done than my last one at Kebab Garden though a little less seasoned than that one which was super tasty. The sandwich was satisfying, though cleary this isn't the top Turkish spot in town.
I got the special lunch chicken gyro combo to go for $11.90. The chicken was tender and brown rice was so tasty! The downside is that I didn't like the watery red and white sauce. The price is not food cart friendly but I also get a lot of meat. I will go back because I love meat.
It's really just a basic, simple joint for a chicken sandwich. You get a pita pocket filled with chicken, tomatoes, and lettuce. The chicken is not very flavorful, and the white sauce and hot sauce are watery, not flavorful either. Plain and boring but at least this place is open late.
The rice pudding was quite good! Cold, creamy, thick, sweet, and sprinkled with cinnamon. Satisfying!
