  1. Although there are many sushi places near my work, I tend to always find myself traveling back to the town I live in to have Maru sushi! They're portions are incredible for their prices on their lunch menu. I've meet friends here on multiple occasions per my request and they've also been very impressed. I love their salad and their miso soup (usually a tough decision for me to pick!). I also love their spicy salmon sauce, although some days it is spicier than others the consistency is perfect and you can always ask for it on the side instead of on top of your roll if you're unsure.

The staff is super friendly and understand you're there on lunch along with you're time constraint. They are diligent and have lots of attention to detail. Check this place out for some real good sushi.

  2. So this is just another local joint that doesn't stick out in any way. Prices are cheap though, but that's about it.  Bento box is the way to go, you get a lot of food that's great for your wallet. The bulgogi, which is Korean beef, was tender like it should be, but was extremely salty!! The ginger dressing on the salad tasted odd to me but not bad either. My favorite had to be the fried rice,  It was made fresh, with pieces of fresh vegetables, eggs and right amount of seasonings for an extra $1.

Now, what really made me raise an eyebrow was the fact that I was served an expired soda from a can. Just made me question how often they check on their products. Also, to add, whoever is doing inventory shouldn't be there since a sushi spot had no Sriracha sauce, Yes you read that correct, NO Sriracha!! My sushi just wasn't the same without that magical spicy sauce. Plus, my California roll was uneven, some pieces were missing cucumbers or avocados while others had it.

Even though we were the only guests in the restaurant, they barely checked in on us, just seemed like they didn't care. It's a small restaurant, so I wouldn't suggest throwing a party or going with 10 people for that matter. Overall, it's a spot to grab a quick meal for a nice price.

  3. My girlfriend loves sushi like LOVES SUSHI.

We've been on this all out hunt in New Jersey to find the best sushi place.  We're both from California – the land of great sushi – this sounds a bit arrogant so I apologize.  But there just isn't much competition for sushi places in NJ so the quality as a result isn't good.  We keep an open mind when trying new places around New Jersey.

J Maru is a local spot we decided to try out.

    We ordered the following:

    –  Udon with shrimp tempura
    –  Sushi lunch special – 8 pieces of sushi and a California roll

The udon was kinda bland and you only get two pieces of tempura.  The sushi lunch special was good.  The fish was fresh and California roll was decent.  Off the top of my head I think you get 4 different kinds of fish for the sushi.

On a side note – If you love ginger and wasabi you'll need to ask for 2nd and 3rds.

J Maru was decent, semi affordable and I think we'll make it back if we don't want to go far for sushi.

  4. Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere:  One of Maru's strong points is the very clean and elegant looking interior.  It has that typical sushi house look but is sleek to the point of wanting to be a trendy NYC establishment.

Noise/sound level:  Out of all the times I have been there the noise level has been quiet to average.  I have gone at odd times so the limited amount of diners could affect the noise level.

Menu:  On the verge of being too big, but at least they mix up a variety of dishes between a lunch and dinner menu.  I needed more time than necessary to make a decision.

Service:  I only ordered take out and had no issues receiving my order when it was supposed to be ready.  I imagine service will be just as timely.

Food:  I've ordered a variety of sushi from here and it was similar to other places.  Maru mixes Japanese and Korean cuisine in the same restaurant which I think is a good idea because there isn't a Korean restaurant near me except for Ho Ho.  But, the food is only average, dry rice, overcooked meat, and fast food like selections.  I ordered LA Calbi once and it was super tough.  While the dish appeared to be good for two, it definitely is only good for one.  The food is not bad though.

    Bar:  BYOB

    Price:  moderate

Overall:  Maru is a typical sushi house that serves food in above average quality.  If you're craving sushi you can't go wrong, or if you want a certain type of Korean rice dish as well, but I would not eat any kind of BBQ dish here again.  Nonetheless I would return to Maru because it's on the same level as a good Chinese restaurant, but serves Japanese and Korean food.

  5. 2nd Time around I wasnt so pleased. hey theres hits and misses, The Kani Salad was not spicy and was mostly lettuce and random veggies–not much kani! what a let down! And my spicy tuna roll was nothing to rave about–in fact it was pretty small. My friend was happy with his philly roll, but this time it seemed to be a bit smaller too.
