Jazz At Kitano

“Every visit to Sunday Brunch at the Jazz restaurant in the Kitano hotel is a special occasion for our family due to the splendid style and tone of Tony Middleton and his band.”

“I think they'd be better off having an insert in the menu explaining their quiet policy than giving a little lecture that taints the air before the performance begins.”

“On this evening, the head musician invites locals to come up and sing or play the piano, drums, or other "jazzy" musical instrument with them.”

  1. We happened upon this place as we were heading back to our hotel. We had great timing because we were able to snag a comfy table. On this evening, the head musician invites locals to come up and sing or play the piano, drums, or other "jazzy" musical instrument with them. That night, we got to experience two great jazz legends:

    – Johnny O'Neal on piano
    – Tony Middleton on mic

The food and drinks were expensive, but I guess those are NY prices. We bought a Cosmo (for me) and a martini (for my fiancé), and snacked on some protein bars I had stashed in my purse lol

  2. Saw Lew Tabackin last night, great performance at a good venue. The host has a strange, teacher like demeanor when asking everyone to respect the band by not speaking. I think they'd be better off having an insert in the menu explaining their quiet policy than giving a little lecture that taints the air before the performance begins.

The service is really what earned this spot 4 stars for us. We were seated in the front row, as we had a visually impaired guest so we literally felt like we were on stage. The server, Harumi was extremely attentive and helpful. For dinner we tried the seared tuna sandwich – solid option, served with fries, the pork chop (way overlooked, needed to be sent back) and the cheeseburger- which was AWESOME. Fries that come with the burger and tuna sandwich are all perfectly done as well.

All in all come for the Jazz, good environment, and enjoy a great burger while you're at it. Skip the rest, including the cheesecake. Extra star for the attentive service.

  3. Went for the Jazz brunch – the music was pretty good – a couple of talented musicians. The food was good too, including some interesting and non-traditional items like a grilled salmon with a ginger sauce. You need to really linger over good music to actually get any value out of it though, the prices are out of this world.

  4. Phenomenal live jazz at an Asian-fusion restaurant? Well, sure–why not?

As we were browsing the streets of Manhattan, two out-of-towners stumble across the inviting sounds of jazz piano pouring out of a small restaurant front. Intrigued, I scoped the menu and it was *really* over-priced and there was a $15 cover. But, since we were on vacation, we decided to pop in for drinks, enjoy some music, skip the food and take the cover charge on the chin. Especially since two gents outside were raving about the music inside. Sold.

Well, enjoy the music we did! Phenomenal… did I already say that? This trio was so much fun to watch and listen to. High energy, interesting improvs and composition. I was so.happy.

We didn't order any special cocktails, just a beer and some prosecco, but the prices on the drinks were pretty steep. It's probably because we're used to Cleveland prices, so I think that was part of the surprise.

We left with a CD from the trio, a full belly of drinks and an empty(er) wallet. I can't talk for the food, but on a weeknight for great jazz, I'd stop by this place again even with the cover charge.
