Great little sushi spot in Astoria and SO CHEAP.
My friend and I came and split a special roll and a salmon avocado roll and each got eel avocado and yellowtail avocado rolls. The bill came to only $40 for all that and a miso soup! The special roll was just okay–it had shrimp tempura and strawberry sauce, but didn't quite work. The eel was a little fishy. But the other rolls were good and fresh and the price can't be beat!
I came here the other night after craving sushi and this is my favorite sushi spot in Astoria. Ordered the shumai, rock shrimp and gyoza for appetizer. I really enjoyed the gyoza it was pan-fried just perfect. The rock shrimp was amazing with the arugula salad. The shumai was definitely different from others that I've had. Never had them with wrapped noodles on them but they were very good. For sushi I ordered the volcano roll, scallop California roll and spicy tuna.. The scallop California roll had the perfect amount of sauce. All three rolls were outstanding.. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
I've been meaning to write a review for this place. I ordered a spicy chicken roll and a Boston roll for take out. The chicken was a little dry, but the sauce complimented well. I was not too fond of the Boston. I ate more rice and cucumber slices then the shrimp. The mayo was almost nonexistent. For an appetizer the fried shrimp rolls were pretty darn good. Crispy and just the right amount of grease to leave you wanting more. No complaints there. I have eaten their chicken, rice and noodles in the past and loved it!! Overall, I would go back!
Stopped by for a sushi fix and over ordered as usual.. Got the rock shrimp, shumai, gyoza and hot & sour soup to start.. Then ordered the Astoria roll, Philadelphia roll, and spicy chicken roll.. Everything was really good but I especially enjoyed the rock shrimp and the gyoza.. The Astoria roll was saucy which I loved. I've never had a chicken sushi roll so the spicy chicken was a first for me.. It was delicious and the sauce was pretty spicy which I didn't mind.. The only thing is that it filled me up like crazy.. This is a great sushi spot
One of the better sushi places in Astoria. The fish is fresher, and the sushi rice is flavorful and fluffy. While not entirely authentically Japanese, like most sushi places in Astoria, this place strives to come pretty close. Occasionally, the kitchen will send out a dish on the house. This place has never been a let down!
I've been to a lot of sushi places, and I always just enjoy my meal and look for a better one next time. No sushi place has ever secured a place in my heart like JJ's has.
My friend and I discovered it one night, and I liked it so much that I had to tell my mom, since sushi is her favorite food. We went, and she also fell in love- and my mom is p i c k y. She gets the Astoria roll. I personally don't love it, because it's too sweet for me, but she's obsessed with it.
Me, on the other hand. Ooooof. I either get a tempura with cream cheese and salmon and avocado that I forgot the name of, or a salmon skin roll, or a Philadelphia roll, or an avocado roll with eel sauce.
It's so freakin' amazing and I always order three rolls and I have a huge appetite for a small girl, but I can't ever fully finish the three. I always finish two and a half. In other places, I get three rolls and then want another meal directly after.
They have this coconut pineapple cake that's terrible though, don't get it. Get the green tea ice cream. SO GOOD!
The service is always delightful and the food comes out fast and fresh.
Big portions, great price.
5 stars!!!
JJ's is a great choice for sushi. I would give their special rolls 5+ stars and their regular rolls about 3.
Came here for dinner early one Friday. We were seated immediately and served pretty quickly. We got the edamame potstickers mainly because we were curious as to what they were. They were pretty good, though the menu did not mention that they had a wasabi-based sauce that we were decidedly not fans of. Despite this, we finished them. The rolls were quite good, I would say better than Junko or Bai on Broadway.
Of the three, I think that JJ's is the best of the bunch, however, it seems more expensive.
They were on top of keeping the water glasses full, probably because the place was pretty empty at 5:30 on a Friday.
