Oh JJ's, how I miss you…you were my dirty water dog heaven,
Back in college this was one of my staple places to stop by for a quick dog or 2 or 3…cheap, quick and located in the middle of the park on Bloomfield Ave…when I was going the menu was limited but apparently I need to return since his toppings have been expanded.
HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!
Today I found a little bit of heaven here on Earth…in NEWARK, no less. One of my co-workers has been telling me about JJs Hot Dog Truck for two years and today a bunch of us loaded up two cars, drove through Newark like we were in a chase from the TV show COPS, and pulled up right about noon. It took me about five seconds to read the menu and know what I wanted…One dog with kraut, hot onions and mustard; one cheese dog; one belly buster with chili, cheese, kraut, and hot onions; and a CandC Grape soda.
And the clouds parted, and rays of light shown down on the meek, and they heard from above "let there be flavor"…and there WAS! I consider myself a hot dog connoisseur and these were some of the greatest dirty water dogs I have EVER had. The hot onions and hot chili had a perfect spiciness to them and the cheese dog was just perfect. So we're standing there after finishing and I look at my co-worker, he gives me a little head nod, and we BOTH get back in line for a fourth dog…I got a chili cheese dog this time and OMG-worth every minute I am going to have to spend on a treadmill/eliptical/walking the dogs or whatever else it takes to burn them off.
As a side note, I haven't had a C and C soda in about 25 years and other than an actual beer, it was the perfect addition to some nearly perfect hot dogs!!!
This establishment/institution/food truck has been here ever since the dinosaurs walked the planet. Every time someone walks up and orders the hotdogs here, they are blasted back to when they were a much younger version of themselves. Back to the first time they sank their teeth into that hot dog in a bun that literally can kill all hotdogs ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
Order the 3 hotdogs and a soda special. If you have a spicy side, get the onions, it's totally out of this world. Other than that, mustard and ketchup will do my friend. Taking your first bite into these babies can simulate unprecedented amounts of euphoria. For best results, wait until you're extremely hangry. Trust me, everybody who's had these before knows exactly what I'm talking about.
This spot right here has been here since your mom and dad was hella young. So it's stood the test of time,,, it was good back then, it's good now and it'll always be good decades after. These guys couldn't miss even if they tried their hardest. Service couldn't get any better either,, it's a food truck, but it's been parked at the same spot ever since,, never has it moved. So technically, it's a hole in the wall as well. You order the food, you bring it to your car and you eat it, simple as that my friend.
My pilgrimage to Jersey is never complete without stopping by here for some killer hotdogs. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from. As far as I'm concerned, this here is the world's ultimate hot dog experience.
Weeeeeeeeeee
These hot dogs are unique. I grew up on this and Dickie Dees right down the street. Two very different hotdogs and are just amazing.
They use sabrett hot dogs in the casing do they snap with each bite. I get mushrooms and cheese with a chocolate cow every time I go. If I want more of a kick I'll get a chili, cheese, and onion hot dog. I don't know much about anything else on the menu because I've eaten here for 30 years and I refuse to order anything else other than those two hot dogs. And I never and I mean NEVER order anything else to drink except a chocolate cow. How dare you disgrace jj's and order anything else to drink to wash them dogs down smh.
If you grew up off the avenue you know that everything I just said is pretty accurate. Open TIL 4:00am.
This is a long standing food truck. My dad used to bring me there when I was kid, so it must have been there for at least 30 years. These are boiled dogs, I think 10 to a lb., so pretty small. But, they are the best water dogs I know of. Last time I went, I got one cheese, one mustard and onions, and one mustard and kraut, and an orange soda, because grape (the champagne of sodas) is only for special occasions. If you have a reasonable appetite you can definitely handle three dogs. I think I paid $13.50 for 6 dogs and 2 sodas. Pretty reasonable price. In a word, JJ's is an institution.
*** Late Night ***
JJ's is the only hot dog truck ya need to visit in Newark. I love this truck!
Its definitely a go to if your in the mood for some banging dirty water dogs at 1am-4am after a club/lounge/bar/whatever kinda night.
They have a great range of toppings or you can keep it simple. All up to you, but I'd recommend the following:
– Onions ketchup
– Belly Buster
– Chili and coleslaw
– Chili and beans
– Cant for forget that C&C soda either… lol
Ohhh yea the Onions have a peppery bite them. Just typing this is making me wanna head over to Bloomfield Ave now. Stop in and check out JJ's ya'll, I believe you'll leave happy.
