Best Bayside Italian Bakery
The rainbow cookies are the best I've ever had. The artificial food coloring is plentiful. The consistency is perfect, not too hard, not too soft. The thick dark chocolate bottom is the foundation for the colors of the Italian flag. The tangy raspberry jam holds everything together. It's an Italian symbolic symphony of flavors.
They also have apricot flavored rainbow cookies, if that's what you fancy.
The pignolis are also one of my fave's here. The taste of the roasted pine nuts atop these cookies add a savory component. There is a crisp and crunchy layer on the outside and the soft and sweet inside. Beware of instant addiction.
Holy Cannoli Batman! They are freshly filled. You got a choice of large ones, mini-ones, and chocolate covered ones.
Delicious Sicilian pizza too! The blessed bread is airy and hole-y.
Another great old-school bakery in the historically Italian immigrant strongholds of suburban Queens!
I can't help but make the comparison to D'Aquila Pastry Shop (yelp.com/biz/d-aquila-pa…), another Italian bakery in Bayside that's usually my go-to:
ITALIAN COOKIES – They're fantastic at Joe's, specifically the pignoli and almond cookies. It's a close call, but Joe's wins the pignoli battle… and what a sweet battle it is.
RAINBOW COOKIES – Slightly better at D'Aquila (more almond flavor).
SFOGLIATELLE (mini) – Tasty here, with a satisfying crunch. But not as perfect (aesthetically or otherwise) as D'Aquila's, where each of the folds are separated delicately and the fresh ricotta filling has a beautiful hint of citrus.
CANNOLI (mini) – Tie. Both are great.
CHEESECAKE (American style) – On the wetter side here – I guess Joe's goes heavier on the cream cheese and eggs, and lighter on the flour. Also, there was no graham cracker base, which was surprising and made for a slightly annoying slicing experience later. Still good.
The only other difference is that Joe's is a little cheaper than D'Aquila, on the order of a couple dollars per pound. Depending on how much of a glutton you are, that adds up!
Otherwise, the selections are similar and pretty much everything you get is going to be fantastic. Here's my advice: Throw your money at both.
This treasure of a bakery will be the only place I go to whenever I have cookie cravings. The cookies sold here trump grocery store-bought cookies in terms of texture, freshness, and taste. This place is amazing and I'm glad I tried it out.
I got five things: their lemon drop pastry (round shaped topped with white glaze), one X-shaped puff pastry, two apricot glaze cookies, a cookie with raspberry jam. (All of this for just $3.50? Awesome.) Each bite of everything melted in my mouth. If I snapped any of these cookies in half, the crumbs from their interior would fall to the floor– that's how soft and easy to chew they were. No more biting into stale cookies or tasting overly sweet frosting on top. This is cookies done right.
It would be nice if this bakery had seats and bathrooms, and I wonder why they don't, because there are two storefronts with a "Joe's Sicilian Bakery" sign– maybe the storeowners could merge both and make the bakery into a place where you can sit down and enjoy your treats. Oh well. That wasn't a big issue for me when I visited, so it doesn't warrant erasing a star.
This bakery is clearly old-school, because it's an independently owned business with a small space that accepts only cash. Though the cash-only policy might bother some folks, I thought it was refreshing not to swipe plastic for once.
Next time I want pastries, I'm definitely coming back!
Not concerned with being flashy , driving by you may almost miss it, but Joe's puts all their focus into what is important which is making awesome delicious products.
The bread is some of the best around, great texture and flavor. They offer a bunch of different loaves. The cookies are fabulous, authentic Italian varieties such as sesame cookies and anisette biscotti. Everything is just so well made. You will not be disappointed.
Buddy might be the cake boss of "Carlos bakery" in Hoboken New Jersey, but Joe's Sicilian is the cake boss of Bayside NY!
Let me tell you something, Joe doesn't need a reality show to prove to you or anybody else that his cakes are phenomenally good.
The cannoli filled cakes and pastries are out of this freaking world delicious! The lemon drops, lobster tails, Sfogliatelle and fresh baked breads are truly awesome!
I know Joe bakes for many restaurants in the local area, so you know they gotta be good.
If you have or are planning a special event, Joe can make a cake to order. One time I ordered a cannoli filled chocolate cake. My guests wanted to eat the cardboard backing the cake was sitting on, oh yeah, it's that good!
Can you find a better Italian bakery in the Bayside area? FUGGED-ABOUT-IT!!!!!
And if you do, Me, Sal, Tony and Vinny are gonna pay you a little visit, Capiche??
Walked in out wondering what they sold in this bakery. Bought a pound of bread sticks, which were delicious. I also bought a loaf of raisin bread, the bread itself looked good but it was very dry. I assume there maybe semolina in the dough, so the bread is not as moist. The Italian cookies looked nice but everything is by the pound. Will have to come back and try them.
Joe's Sicilian Bakery has been around forever. I'm 49 and I grew up with their Sicilian pizza, Delicious! Love their lobster tails cream puffs. Italian breads and cookies. This is a good old fashioned Italian Bakery. If you live in Bayside your very lucky to have Joe's so close
Tried a mix of the cookies and we are fans. Nice and buttery and not too sweet. WE also picked up a loaf of meat bread which had a good amount of prosciutto bits mixed in it. It was AWESOME, so awesome that we devoured the loaf very quickly and forgot to take a picture. We will be going back for some more so will post next time.
