  1. I have been going to JH for years with my father and, honestly, I just don't get it. Their hotdogs/sauce are quite good but the rolls always taste stale to me. Now, I'm not saying that they are stale but they just don't taste great. They're too doughy and stiff. I prefer more of a potato roll type of roll. I also find that the roll to dog ratio is off and therefore offsets the delicate balance between the two. The roll literally overpowers it. Their fries are good but never seem to come out well done enough. Rounds are much better and have the often coveted but rarely duplicated crunch. I think if they had softer rolls and better fries I would like them a lot more.

However, I seem to be in the vast minority since just about everyone I know LOVES their food and raves about it. Maybe I have too high a sensitivity to buns. Who knows?

  2. I came here the other weekend with my friends who have been here a million times. I wasn't too sure on what to get so the man behind the counter helped me with my choice. I ended up getting a hot dog with chili and raw onions and an order of cheese fries with gravy along with a medium Barq's diet root beer.

My hot dog was super delicious and had a nice snap to it from being fried. I've been to ruts hut before and they are way to fried for me in my opinion. The chili had a nice flavor and with the addition of some ketchup it hit the spot. My fries were the bomb! the cheese was melted perfectly and the gravy was super addictive.

For the longest time my father has always joked about wanting to come here for any holiday celebrating him and I would look at him saying "seriously dad hot dogs for fathers day?" I now understand why! They are absolutely delicious!

PS- They accept credit cards which hot grill doesn't apparently.

  3. Back in the day it was a real treat when dad would bring home dinner wrapped in white paper because we knew that he had made the pit stop in Paterson to bring us home some Johnny and Hanges. This place was great back then and it's still pretty decent now, I don't really know how to put my finger on what has changed, it's just not the same. The chili sauce is still good, but I feel like it's been modified since changing hands and its' move to Fair Lawn…is that cinnamon or nutmeg I taste?

The dogs are still fried instead of grilled which I believe is the absolute best part of this North Jersey Staple. The milkshakes are fantastic, and strangely enough for being a hot dog joint the burgers and even their tuna are pretty damn tasty. Story in short, if you find yourself on Rt. 208 or the Bergen County area, do yourself a favor and hop off at Maple Ave; get an order of gravy fries and a few dogs all-the-way…you won't regret it…until the inevitable heartburn kicks in.

  4. Great place for burgers and hot dogs. Their all the way everything's are delicious whether you get it with fries, a burger or a dog.

Comparable to hot grill as most have stated. Johnny and Hanges takes credit cards though where hot grill is cash only.

The guys behind the counter are super nice and friendly.

I personally love this place. I like hot grill more but I come here more often because of its proximity to me.

  5. North Jerseyans and their hot dogs….who knew. Being from Central Jersey, I had no idea what an "all the way" dog was. My best guess was ketchup, mustard, and relish. I was pleasantly surprised to find a nicely cooked dog with a pop, nutmeggy chili, onions, and mustard. Nice!  Awesome dog! I'll be back for more.

  6. This place is near my Boo Boo's work place. I stopped by for a quick bite. Got a hot dog all the way and the potato rounds with chili and a medium root beer.

I used to Libby's and the new Coral in Paterson and Johnny and Hanges did win me over. It could be that it doesn't have the old time charm people talk about. But, I do feel safe dining here.

  7. Went here on a whim one night about a year ago. My friend had been talking about this place so much that I had to go (his friends dad owns the place). Very clean in a weird area. Located right off a highway. Cheap, good food. They have specials on Sundays (or at least when I went). Right up there with Hot Grill and similar everything that you would think it's the same place. Go for it if your in the area…
