John’s Of Bleecker Street
“The brick over that they use for this place has been there since 1929 so it is fair to say that its done its job perfectly.”
“Compared to Grimaldi's, John's Famous Pizzeria's pizzas are a bit more cheesier, and that totally worked for me!”
“Opened in 1920 by John Sasso, a disciple of Lombardi's, New York's first pizza restaurant, John's pizza is STILL delicious.”

Some of the best New York city pizza I've ever had! Topped of the celebrating of Father's Day with a pie from this historic restaurant. Pies are made fresh and cooked in a coal-fired brick oven right in front of you. Loved watching the guys assemble the pizza and all the fresh ingredients being used.
We chose a classic…the pepperoni and mushroom pie, and it did not disappoint.. The crust was topped with a very "fresh" tasting tomato sauce (slightly acidic) and real chunks/slices of mozzarella (not just a typical grated stuff from a bag). The crust itself was charred perfectly on the bottom from the coal-fired brick oven, given it that slightly burned taste that makes it so good.
There was no problem taking down the entire pie between three people. My only regret was not enough time (or stomach space!) to give another combination a try…but we will be back!!!
Pizza here is great. It's a rather large space, but it does get packed quick. I was a party of 2 and ended up waiting around 30mins for a table. Service was quick and drinks were always filled.
The pizza is good, better as take out…
The rest is whatever.
Uncomfortable bench seats that will be written off by the nostalgic. Old photos adorn each bench which are interesting to look at. I'm not a fan of destroying wood with my claim to fame initials but here it seems a tradition and there is nowhere left to write!
The wait was kind of stupid. The seats weren't filled but we were told to wait outside. So after a while we did score a bench seat which will keep you awake with short seat allowances and a high back. No cushions here!
The winner is really the pizza. It's fresh and crispy, NY style. We also got a sad side of spaghetti which hadn't been drained all the way and was slightly watery at the base of the bowl. The sausage is thick and spiced well.
They also give you this sad bare basket of bread (barely two hunks of baguette). If you're desperately hungry you might waste your calories on that.
I would wait for the pizza.
I've been dying to try out this old-school classic pizza joint but the line out the door always scared me away. It was Saturday at 7pm, but I thought the rainy day would be a prime time for no line and boy was I right – we were seated immediately.
The service here is so-so but it's not exactly the place you expect good service at. My boyfriend and I are huge eaters so we ordered a medium with pepperoni and a medium with mushrooms & onions. The toppings are on the pricer side with $4 per topping.
I am a pizza lover (ratemypizzas is my instagram). The pizzas were NY style and greasy AF. Heavy & cheesy. Not exactly crunchy but not not crunchy. It's the kind of pizza you eat while watching a football game.
The pepperoni one could have used more sauce but then again I'm a saucy gal so most people might be fine with it. The mushroom pizza was much saucier but also soggier, still good though. It did have a bit of an after taste though which I think was from the dough rising incorrectly or for too long. Either way, both pizzas would good NY style. The type that just NEEDS ranch. They should offer ranch. My boyfriend and I only had one slice left, so if your a big eater get two mediums like us.
When we left there was a line out the door. Overall it's good pizza but not worth waiting in line out the door. I think it's reputation exceeds itself.
John's is my favorite pizza joint in NYC. Way better then the other legendary old school spots, Lombardi's and Grimaldi's.
Decent sized and good amount of seating. Service is friendly. Pizza comes out quick.
Gets really busy during lunch. I always try to come before the lunch rush.
Very old school decor, probably the same stuff they had when they opened way back when.
Large Pizza w/ Pepperoni, Peppers, & Mushrooms – $20 + $12 ($4 each topping) – I love the crispy thin crust. I have not found anywhere else that can compare. The tomato sauce is clean and simple. Toppings are typical. The slices are huge. That crust just makes this pizza so great.

Yelp won't let me put this restaurant on a list unless I write a review (Yelp, please change this policy!)
Therefore, this is a stub review for the purpose of populating my list. I'll write the review later.
However, whatever rating I give the restaurant with this stub review is the rating I'd give the restaurant with a real review.
For the ultimate in thin slice pizza this is your place. The charm of this restaurant is unmatched. It breathes history. It ain't pretty, but it's large and lively. Best of all is pizza itself. Do not put too many toppings on or it will get somewhat soggy because of the ultra thin crust and be careful when the pizza first gets to you because it will be hotter than the surface of the sun!
No slices! But they do accept credit cards. Also get the pitchers of drink instead of by the glass. It's a much better deal.
Also beware of the lines. If you go as a couple you will get in much quicker than if you bring your entire extended family.
I'll take any heat that comes my way: the pizza at John's was definitely worth writing home about. My brother, nephew and I shared a cheese pizza last week and polished off the entire pie. Service was prompt and friendly, with plenty of refills of water. I liked the cozy wooden booths. We'll probably talk about this meal for years to come. The crust was perfect: not too crispy, not too soft, and we all agreed the wood-fired char was just right.
