I came here for dinner with friends and had a great experience. I enjoyed my shrimp fajitas and my friends loved their meals. We shared the guacamole, which was huge. I think we had to ask for more chips about 3 times! I definitely think this place is more Mexican than French. There were some French items on the menu and they serve a number of French wines, but it's majority Mexican cuisine, with Mexican decor. Regardless, the food and service were great. Only cons are that it's a bit overpriced and Am/Ex cash only.
This easily could have been four stars. Easily!
The food was quite good, although paying $12 for two spoonfuls of snapper ceviche is insanely steep. It was delicious, but every mouthful should not have cost $4.
The burger was delicious and cooked perfectly. Loved the flavors, looked great, fantastic. Fries were fine.
Unfortunately, the bad rating starts and ends at service. Even after sitting down, it took a while to place our order. When our dinner was finished, it took FIFTEEN minutes to flag down the hostess/waiter to get a check.
And then…well, even worse. Their credit card systems were down (they ONLY accept Amex, fyi), and the hostess said we could either wait until they were back up or use the ATM. We waited. They took my card, then came back and said it was still down. She told us to use the ATM.
This is amazing to me. Credit card systems not functioning is the problem of the restaurant, not the customer. To tell them to use an ATM, which no doubt has a fee, is completely unacceptable. There was no attempt to accommodate us (i.e. we'll subtract the fee from your bill), the hostess was incredibly uncaring and bordering on rude.
Finally, after waiting half an hour, the systems were back up. I should not have to write about how to have decent service, but here I am, doing it again.
50/50 on whether I go back. This one will stick with me for a while.
The guacamole came out lighting speed, yet it tasted as fresh as a child's language to his parents trying to stay out past his curfew on a school night. The tuna tartar was simple and good. But it wasn't flavorful as I would have liked it to be. Living in NYC, my tuna tartar expectations have been increasing exponentially. The Lobster Risotto was quite delicious and heavy on the truffle but extremely underweight on the lobster. Minus a star for the lack of lobster. The chicken tacos were a bit spicy, yet pretty good. Had to wave down the server everytime which was a bit frustrating, otherwise, pretty good experience.
Came here for casual brunch date. The menu looked really good and the wait at the other place we wanted to go to was too long. My friend always comes here so I decided to give it a try. I can only judge on what I got which was the huevo rancheros. That is usually my go-to for brunch at a Mexican place. The one here is quite different from what I've had before. It was really spicy and saucy and the tortilla wasn't that crispy. It was good but not what I was expecting.
Overall service was ok. The annoying part about this place is they only take cash or American Express which was a nusance when the check came.
I came here while waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant. I ordered the mint jalapeno mojito and the nachos. I love spicy drinks and the waiter advised this one. The drink was disappointing as it had no flavor and instead was just spicy.
The nachos were good! I got the vegetarian nachos which included surprisingly delicious sauteed vegetables along with the standard guacomole, cheese ( could have used more), black beans and tomatoes.
I spend Bastille day at French Mexican restaurant … yesterday. As it was the EuroSoccer Final Game, the place got really crowded. I came early to have the brunch with 2 friends. We sat at the bar to watch the Soccer game. My friends ordered the burrito and the crepes and I ordered the Mexican salad. We also ordered the Guacamole for appetizer. Everything was really good. The Guacamole was medium and very tasty and the tortillas were really thick and crunchy. the big surprise was my salad. It was very original and changed from what you are use to find in restaurants ( the cobb salade, the Ceasar SAlad, the Bacon Ranch Grilled salad…) In my salad I had fish ( still warm), salad, an eff, some mango, sunflower seeds , tasty tomatoes. For drink I only had a Red Sangria. I was not too crazy about it. It was just ok. Their cocktails might have been a better choice. We also had the churros and the trio creme brulee… Churros was AMAZING! The Trio creme brulée DELICIOUS. The only thing i would recommend would be to put some more. If I ordered a desert it is because I was still hungry ( quantity needs to be revised) . On the service aspect, it was happy. I know it was not very easy for the guy behind the bar as it was a very important final and the bar was full but every one was in a pretty good mood so he was too ( until France lost against Portugal) ….
Very good address for the area and I recommend the salad and the 2 deserts I ordered.
Came in for dinner last night and loved it! We sat in a booth in the back. I loved the decor – so cute and cozy. We got the guac as an app and it was delicious. As for my meal, I got the veggie tacos and it was excellent! Just note, they only take cash or Amex!
Great experience overall 😀
I'd been hesitant to try Jolie Cantina given the inconsistent Yelp reviews and the fact Mexican-French fusion is a lot to wrap one's head around.
But I finally stopped in for dinner yesterday, and it seems my first instincts were correct. Though some dishes were tasty, there is much room for improvement.
My friend and I ordered the famed guacamole, the seasonal bouillabaisse special, and the crab tinga chilaquiless well as a few margaritas.
The guacamole was very good but I was disappointed it wasn't made table-side, as some reviewers have mentioned theirs was.
The bouillabaisse was also tasty, though you could tell the scallops were pre-frozen, which is never enjoyable. My friend's crab tinga chilaquiles was pretty difficult to eat. It was ridiculously spicy, to the point where the flavors were lost to the heat. The margaritas were good, not the best I've ever had.
Overall, the fusion concept behind Jolie Cantina is cool, though something seems to have gotten lost in the execution. The menu is expansive, so perhaps zeroing in on a few fresh options would be a good solution — or at least a place to start.
