Jou Jou

“Jou Jou is probably my second or third favorite place to get lunch in Washington Heights, right after Shangri-La and/or Tasty Deli.”

“It's less than a block away from the hospital and they're not just limited to salads.”

“So Jou Jou's, a brick and mortar establishment, who just happens to produce so much deliciousness, is my new CUMC home away from home.”

  1. It's great for being one of the only decent places in the area, but objectively it's nothing special. The soups, salads, coffee, and sandwiches are all a little overpriced, but I go back because it's cute and good, and the staff is friendly and efficient, which is an amazing dynamic. There's not nearly enough seating, and it's right by the door which isn't ideal for cold weather, but everyone in the area just grabs-and-goes so it's fine for the clientele.

My order of choice would have to be the make-your-own freshly made salad, which is super efficient even at around lunchtime (I'm in and out in about 3 minutes). I almost always get a small tomato-cheddar soup as well, but the salad is definitely filling on its own. Beware it's CASH ONLY.

  2. I'm a huge fan of Jou Jou. A hidden gem for delicious, well crafted sandwiches.

My absolute favorite is the caprese sandwich (I add chicken, extra $2) on focaccia bread with an almond paste. Delicious.

Another favorite is the grilled cheese with tomatoes, red onions, and chipotle mayo. The only downfall is that the country white bread it comes on can have huge holes in it.

I don't bother to prefer desserts anymore because it's always a fail, they tend to send out the wrong items. It adds up fast, a sandwich and a drink can be $10+. I've only gotten delivery (at least 30 mins).

  3. Cash only. Salads are great and cheaper than Strokos because they don't price it by weight. Wish the service was a little friendlier.

  4. Bring cash!

Well it's pretty expensive but the food is pretty good. The salad is going to cost you around $9 (you'll get more bang for your buck at chipotle). But sometimes the healthy part of myself just wants a salad and this one hits the spot. You get a choice of greens, protein, cheese and unlimited veggies. The paninis are decent but you can get cheaper ones next door. The desserts are pretty hit or miss. The service is always good. The guys who make the salads are really nice and keep a positive attitude despite the lunchtime rush.

    I'll keep going but rarely!

  5. Good for a quick bite to eat but to be honest, their wraps and sandwiches are tiny and cost way too much. But convenience is key up in Washington Heights when we are running to and from class so this is definitely a good, consistent option with yummy sandwiches that won't disappoint. They try to rush you out of there and tend to yell but it's super small so makes sense that they want customers in and out of there quickly.

    Important: CASH ONLY!!

  6. I only come here for the salads and they are the bomb. I love being able to make my own salad as they have a lot of ingredients to choose from. All their ingredients taste fresh every time. It does get very busy during the lunch time rush, but the salad line moves fairly quickly. They are very efficient about that. Salads are a bit pricey at about $9 for a container, but it's worth it if you're in this area. There are just no other, better & tastier/healthier options in this area for salads.

  7. IIWII = 3 stars. What?! "It is What It Is." Serviceable salads and sandwiches but nothing special. The Bruce Greenwood of NYC delis.

  8. I've finally found my go-to salad place close to the hospital. It's less than a block away from the hospital and they're not just limited to salads. They have breakfast options, juices, salads and sandwiches. They have an outdoor seating area when the weather ideal; they'll open up the doors and spread the tables and chairs out.
They have a "Make Your Salad" area in the back. From the few times I've been there, it seems to be the most popular section of Jou Jou. You first grab your preferred plastic bowl of green, then choose your protein, two toppings (my favorite: bacon bits!) and then unlimited veggie options. Last, you choose your dressing and they mix it for you, place it back in the plastic container for you and you pay at the register. Their salads, after tax, comes out to ~$8. FYI, they're only cash which is probably the biggest con. Compared to some of the other areas, their food seems to be slightly on the more expensive side.
Next, I need to try their juices!
