Even before I became a "foodie", I've been exposed to some of the top Thai Restaurants in NYC 'cause I lived in Woodside. Places like Spicy Shallot, Sripraphai, and the great AYADA Thai.
If it weren't for my Brooklyn-native girlfriend, I don't know if I'd ever come across what is now my favorite Thai Restaurant. Fantastic venue in a beautiful neighborhood, friendly staff, and delicious food at a very affordable cost.
First off, parking is plentiful, if you're commuting via public trans, the G/F station is a stroll away.
I was impressed the moment I walked in. I almost felt like I should be dressed up to eat here. The decor is hip & sophisticated, yet very simple. Not many frills, a cool accent here and there which I really appreciated. At the back of the restaurant, they've got the open kitchen which I always enjoy. Not only does it express their confidence in their cleanliness, but it fills the room with an incredible aroma.
Did I mention they've got OUTDOOR SEATING!? Though I don't typically enjoy dining outdoors in backyards because of mosquitos, I just couldn't pass on this opportunity. You'll know what I'm talking about when you get there. It's beautiful out there.
FOOD!
– Crispy Calamari ($7)
A very solid app. Crispiness done right and it came with a yummy sweet chili sauce.
– Corn Fritter Cakes ($5 – 5 pieces)
I was wow'd as soon as these came to the table. They looked and tasted delicious! Crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. Also, the sauce that came with it was crack!
– 1/2 Chicken w/ sticky rice & mango salad ($10)
A monster portion! Perfectly roasted 1/2 chicken w/ some sort of curry rub, a deceivingly small portion of sticky rice & a heaping helping of mango salad. This was not only filling, but packed with flavor. Each bite produced a foodgasmic moan, there's no way this huge piece of chicken is THAT juicy. I imagine that they made an extra effort to brine this thing over night.
– Kang Masaman ($9)
Again, a huge portion of my favorite Thai Curry. Presenting it in a beautiful bowl made the experience that much more enjoyable.
– Beef Pad See Yue ($9)
Perfectly cooked noodles w/ a delicious sauce. The sauce was perfectly distributed throughout the dish leaving none of the noodles SAUCELESS. The beef wasn't skimped and there wasn't too much scrambled egg in it. Oh and… it was a huge portion. No surprise there!
– Thai Iced Tea ($3)
Nothing mindblowing here, but it was served in beautiful tall glass, and it was enough for my girlfriend and I to share.
It's honestly so hard to believe the price on the check because we've always left JOYA stuffed with food! Thank you for existing, JOYA!
I was a little surprised that this place was rated so highly. I liked the place, and in this area of Brooklyn there is not a ton of ethnic foods, so its nice to get something different. BUT compared to other Thai places in the city (especially in Hells Kitchen where there are a million Thai places) this place is just ok. Its reasonably priced, but so is almost every Thai place in the city. I would go again if I was in the mood for Thai, although going to midtown isnt that hard either….
I'm disappointed 🙁 my mom and I ordered a tom yum soup and mango salad to start. The tom yum was barely warm and salty beyond belief. I say that as someone who loves salty food! We asked them to warm it up but they didn't really even do it. Then we got the koong kraprow and a shrimp curry. My koong kraprow was really not good… The sauce was weird and the veggies felt very bland. My mom was not crazy about the curry. The mango salad was the best dish.
Atmosphere: look at the light fixtures! Do not forget, not that they're hard to miss, but worth noting. Very busy on a Saturday night. We came around 8:45, and were given a 30 minute wait time but were seated within 20.
Food: so good! And so inexpensive! I had the spicy noodles with chicken and friend had the pad Thai. Both were tasty, well cooked, and not too saucy. Heat was the perfect level on my spicy noodles, and there were tons of fresh veggies in the dish as well. Lots of leftovers for a $9 dish.
Drinks: Went with sauv blanc. Thumbs up. I had a glass of prosecco and it came in its own personal bottle. Very cute.
Opportunity to eavesdrop on first dates is a plus as well! AND they cover the table with paper so I hope your hangman game is strong.
I enjoyed my meal
For under $10, I ordered the coconut curry with chicken (one of the many listed; I think I had the manang one?). I'm a fan of coconut curries that are more milky and sweet vs spicy since this girl can't handle the kick. I was pretty hungry coming in so I devoured my dish real quick. My curry came with chicken, peanuts and potato. Super simple. So if you're looking for fancy with a variety of ingredients, maybe this dish isn't for you. But if you're craving a solid curry dish, I recommend this one.
Also, I'm glad I didn't have to wait as the restaurant was pretty full.
Overall, I'd come back if I'm craving Thai curry but as a girl who has a lot more places bookmarked on Yelp, I don't think I'll have the intense NEED to come back asap but I would for sure come again some time.

Joya is Thai food heaven, and there is always a wait to prove it. I've never had a mediocre meal here. The flavors are always a one punch knockout. I recommend the flat spicy noodles, pad thai, and basically any of the curry. You just can't go wrong. Joya is busy, but worth the wait. There is also a backyard so you can eat outside. The service is solid, and the food always come out very quickly. They also have a full bar, but no beer on draft.
The first time I visited this place, my gf and I were looking for somewhere for Lunch. We picked this place and immediately was taken away by the ambience. Neo Soul was playing, candles were lit and everything was clean and streamlined. We were seated immediately and ordered within 5-7 minutes. Food came out almost instantly.
I MEAN HOT!
Since then we have come back for lunch and enjoyed the nice patio and have tried several things on the menu. My favorite has GOT to be the wings!!!
Portions are a nice size for under $11 dollars, beers and wines are reasonable. The wait staff is attentive. Two thumbs up over here.
Authentic Thai food with a hipster zing. When you walk in, it doesn't feel like a Thai restaurant with the open bar and lighting. However the food is on point, the pad Thai must be handled by chefs straight from Thailand. It's a perfect little restaurant to have date night, casual and not too quiet in case it gets awkward…
I ordered the kang nuur (green curry) with brown rice at no extra charge. My girlfriend ordered the pad Thai. We also started the night with papaya salad and some fried calamari which makes every meal better. The servers were also very friendly and welcoming throughout the entire meal.
