Another recent discovery, I was walking down 83rd, and I thought…oh god not another Mexican place! Dont get me wrong, I love Mexican food, so much so that friends call me Jamexican(jamaican american mexican)But Roosevelt ave has so many taquerias…I didnt think this one would be any different, but it is . First of all is spotless, super duper eat off the floors clean!!!! The decor is welcoming, vivid colors, and spacious(not huge, but a good amount of elbow room) Now onto the food…I played it safe and ordered a carne enchilada taco, a suadero taco, and a barbacoa tostada. Everything was very fresh, and made to order and extremely tasty. The barbacoa really stood out, it was well flavored, not too gamey . Items were served with chopped cilantro, onions and guacamole, and then radishes, grilled nopales, spring onions, and jalapeno on the side. The flavors from the side condiments took my items from 4 star to 5 stars. It's also worth noting the staff is really nice, great service! I will definitely be back to give their breakfast a try!!!
A hidden gem. Delicious and authentic Mexican food. They have a lot of selection on their menu. I love the fact that it's so cheap, but the portions are HUGE! I came here with a big group and our whole order came up to about $100 for 17 people. That's with appetizers, entrees and alcohol! I ordered 2 types of huaraches (a carnitas and carne asada). The waitress warned me that one portion is big, but I didn't listen. She wasn't kidding! I could've fed 2 people with one huarache. My only problem was I felt that the dough was too thick. Otherwise, the food was fantastic. My husband couldn't believe how big the tacos were too. We all left with doggy bags. I will definitely return.
Updated! The last time I got delivery here, the guy told me to order on the phone next time because they give you a discount, and that GrubHub charges them huge fees, so it would not only help them out, but we would get a discount. Well, the food was still good, but there were multiple problems, and I won't order here ever again.
1) There was no discount. That's simple.
2) The man on the phone gave an attitude about taking the order, and in response to our address (which clearly is in their delivery zone) gave MORE attitude saying how far it was.
3) They didn't get the order correct. Instead of a burrito, nachos, and a cemita, which the guy on the phone repeated back correctly, we received (and were charged for, for that matter): nachos with chorizo and a burrito.
Are you kidding me? I did YOU a favor by wasting my time with your obnoxious employee on the phone, and then you fucked up the order and forgot my half of the meal? Thanks so much.
So, long story short, the food IS good, but order through GrubHub. It's not worth your aggravation on the phone or when your order arrives. They are liars, con artists, and can't even get a three piece order right. Grow up.
It is great that they serve very good mole de olla, which is hard to find in many other Mexican places. The broth is tasty with tender beef ribs and a lot of vegetables. Their refried beans is also delicious. The service is not as good though.
If one wants good, authentic Mexican food and cannot, for whatever reason, take to Yelp for recommendations, the next best thing would be to step onto the 7 train around dinnertime and follow the hoards of hungry Mexicans to their local spots. My husband and I unabashedly did just that tonight, following a couple to the doors of Juquila (#stomachstalker). The jovial music and glitzy sombreros on the wall felt a little over the top at first but the crowded tables were a heartening sight. So were the free tortilla chips and black bean dip with a faint dusting of cojita cheese that were proffered as an appetizer whilst we perused the menus. We inhaled these and tried painfully not to ask for more for a whole five minutes, but when we did, our waitress cheerfully brought over a new basket with another bowl of dip AND a trio of sauces on the side (which were mainly to spicily dress our entrees, but equally wonderful with tortillas).
Out of curiosity, I ordered the sopes from the appetizer menu as part of my entree, which turned out to be somewhat underwhelming. Three fried corn tortillas were given a good black bean smear and then covered with onion, lettuce, tomato, crema, and cotija cheese (meats can be added for an additional charge). On their own, they were somewhat bland and uninteresting but given much needed zing with a zealous drizzle of a green hot sauce. I would have been much better off had I ordered more of the tacos, which turned out to be the absolute saving grace of my meal. The menu lists a much varied assortment of proteins but I went with the grilled tilapia which was just lovely. The fish was chopped rather than whole, but the faint but tasty grilled flavor, along with the occasional crunchily charred bits made me overlook their minor crime of tussling up a filet. A doubling of soft tortillas, vegetables, hot sauce, and a strong hit of lime juice made me instantly regret wasting my stomach space on the forgettable sopes when I could have ordered a plate of these instead. So word to the wise – get a taco. At least one. At around $2.50 per, it's hard not to.
Service was quick and pleasant, and we were astounded to hear that closing time (at least on a Friday night) is at 6:30. In the morning. We're definitely down to keep Juquila in our back pocket for our late night/early morning hunger pangs. If you're curious, you're welcome to stalk us there.
The ambiance looks great. Clean, nice, and not too loud. Nice place to hang out.
The waitresses were very attentive to our needs.
In terms of food, we had:
Guacamole appetizer, it was good.
Corn on the Cob
Chorizo Taco
Carne Asada Taco, it was good. The meat had a wonderful taste.
Pescado Taco
Carnitas Taco
Carnes Enchilada Taco
Pescado Taco
Suadero, it was ok.
Caldo de Pollos y Verduras. It was ok, unlike other places. It was too watery, not much of taste. Disappointed. Other places would have it thick and with flavor all around the soup.
Churros, it was not good. It was too hard. It is supposed to be soft and crunchy…
Tres Leches, it was good.
This place offered a lot of mixed feelings. Some dishes were good and some were ok. Therefore, overall, this place is A-OK place to go for Mexican food.
