Kaname Restaurant
“The sashimi dinner might appear more expensive than most places, at 24 dollars, but this is simply because Kaname provides much higher quality sushi and sashimi at very decent portions.”
“This place rocks for great fresh fish, huge pieces that beat any sushi place I've ever been to in terms of size and the quality is tops.”
“The sushi comes in extremely large portions.”

Hey Kaname, read and heed, bigger doesn't mean better.
I ordered the deluxe sushi special which comes with miso soup, 5 pieces of sushi and a tuna roll. The sushi, if you can call it that, consisted of a huge piece of not so fresh fish on top of a huge piece of tasteless rice and a ton of overpowering wasabi. Undoubtedly the worst sushi I've ever had. The miso soup was the only edible part of the meal.
Go elsewhere, don't waste your time.
This popular, trendy Japanese restaurant, nestled conveniently in the shadow of dozens of high-rise apartments and condos, is unique in one key feature I've found nowhere in all my sushi fare wanderings (a significant statement). Their sashimi cuts are the biggest I have ever seen and the photos only capture a partial and poor perspective of their awesome, meaty size.
I watched as my brother and our local dinner mates did their very best to deftly grip the sushi between their inefficient chopsticks, maneuver the piece through their shoyu and try to take a bite while I'd simply grab the thing with red-painted talons, slop it through the sauce and take the necessary three or four bites to claim sushi success…I'm such a lady (but hey, I didn't drop one piece). Anyone trying to finish off one of these babies in less than that takes the chance of choking and this gal isn't CPR certified anymore. You're going downtown with the paramedics.
The edamame was not fresh and failed to generate any snap while the miso soup was the most flavorful item that I tried. But soup is soup and we didn't come here for that. And unfortunately, a healthy, generous cut of fish won't hide the fact that it was not the best available, the otoro being downright tough and chewy. Tuna belly should melt in your mouth. I'm just glad the Sapporo was flowing liberally or I may have caused a stink, embarrassed my brother's friends and got to meet owner George under less than favorable terms. When eating sushi, it's always best to be friends with the staff.
I need to return as my brother said that it wasn't their best day and give them another shot. I never wish to offend but want to be honest and this visit was not something to write home about…except for the size of the cuts.

This place is definitely a hit or miss. Quality of food is never bad but nothing too special and consistency can be an issue. The owner / sushi chef seems to have a great personality and patrons seem to enjoy his company. But my review is strictly on the food I've been served. Great thing about this place is that as a person who enjoys sashimi, cut is pretty thick. On a good day, fish quality is so fresh, I wonder why they can't keep up the same quality. Then other times, I've come across mediocre quality of sashimi, which is never a pleasing thing.
