Happened to come here for lunch, they have really great specials. I ordered a sashimi deluxe and it came with miso soup and a bowl of rice. Already way too much food that I can finish. The sashimi regular comes with 12 pieces of fish. Pretty good deal for $11.95. It included 3 pieces of tuna, 3 pieces of salmon, 2 piece red snapper, 2 piece white tuna, and 2 piece squid. All the fish tasted fresh, but quality was so and so. ( I only say this because I've tried omakase.)
I guess it's passable for lunch. I also noticed there wasn't many patrons here dining in but they were constantly making take out orders.
This place was not bad.
We did not do an AYCE. We instead decided to order from the menu. We came here to try a new place for my mom's birthday. They ordered a boat, I got a few rolls, and my brothers ordered the beef terriyaki and a dinner box. The food overall wasn't bad. Wasn't spectacular, but not bad at all. It seemed like a slow night, but maybe because it was a Thurs?
It's not the first place I'd go, but I wouldn't mind coming back.
I came in for dining for the lunch AYCE which is $14 a head.
I have been avoiding AYCE for a year.
This place seem to be new since the last time I was in this area, i I thought I give it a try.
It was a Wednesday noon with just one customer when I walked in.
Very dark with limited lighting.
You have to ask for the AYCE menu, I was disappointed with I saw the list.
There are a few appetizers and the common rolls. I liked their shrimp tempera and scallion pancake and eel. The sushi rolls are just the usual taste.
It seem that this store has a major take-out business because they were packing up the orders and delivering them in between my orders. They are a bit slow because there is only one sushi chef.
Just not feeling this place…
I ordered for delivery and tried out the spicy salmon, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, eel avocado, and california roll. With the lunch specials, you get to choose whether you want soup or salad so I tried out both. First off within 15-20 minutes of placing the order, the order was delivered. However, the person that delivered the order was very rude when I picked it up.
As far as the taste, the rice was softer than other places I have tried. The eel from the roll was not entirely fresh and I could taste the fishy-ness, the shrimp tempura roll was pretty good with light batter and a sauce drizzled on top, the spicy tuna and salmon roll was just okay, but I've experienced better. The dressing from the salad was on the sweeter side, but I still ate everything.
I probably would not eat here again, considering how many sushi restaurants are around this neighborhood, I only decided to order from here because I thought I'd give it a try, but after this time, I would pass on this restaurant. Other than the delivery man with rude manners and the rolls just mediocre, I'd give it three stars.
Had delivery today because it's super cold and I don't want to go out. I had the 3 roll lunch roll- the sweet potato roll, shrimp tempura roll, and chicken teriyaki roll. I didn't like the mayo in the shrimp tempura roll but the other two rolls were pretty good. My boyfriend also had the 3 roll lunch special- the crunchy yellow tail roll, chicken tempura roll, and the Alaskan roll. The crunchy yellow tail roll wasn't crunchy…. Besides that, the gyoza was alright a the miso soup, well what can I say, its just miso soup. Oh and it took forever to get delivered so it didn't taste so fresh but can't complain since it's cold out.
They say you can never make another first impression and my first impression of this just opened Japanese restaurant is mixed. Saw this place had opened and went to give it a try as Japanese is my fave. That being said did Bensonhurst really need another Japanese spot? How about opening a Thai or Vietnamese place? Well despite that I called in an order for pickup and asked for a Pork Teriyaki lunch Bento box. This is supposed to include rice,a California Roll and Shumai. I figured it was a good way to sample a few different dishes. Sadly when I get home I realize they gave me the Pork teriyaki lunch not the box. I can see how this is confusing but I clearly said box on the phone so perhaps an order taker with a better graps of English couldve helped.
That all said the food was not bad. Pork was a lil teeny bit tough but the sauce was really good. The Yellowtail/Scallion roll I got was also fresh tasting and held together. The Miso soup tasted like it came from the giant vat of Miso soup that every place loads up from,a pet peeve I have mentioned in other reviews.
Overall the place looks alot nicer from the inside than the outside and the menu has some different stuff on it so I will try it again. Perhaps dining in will result in actually getting what I ordered.
It's $14.95 for AYCE sushi lunch on a Saturday. (not sure if it's a different price for dinner and/or weekdays). There was only one other table dining in. It seems like Kasumi is more popular for takeout.
The AYCE menu doesn't have many non-raw fish options, if you don't eat sushi. They've got your typical salads, tempura, teriyaki, and udon. If you're ordering the rock shrimp, the menu says 3 pieces but it's really 6 pieces. So don't make the same mistake as I did and place two orders because it wasn't that great. They also don't have any special rolls on the menu. It's only basic hand rolls, which was a little disappointing.
As for the fish, it was okay. It's what you would expect from one of these sushi spots. There's one item on the menu called saba, which is actually mackerel. Not sure why they don't just write mackerel, but this one tasted SO gross – like it was on the verge of being spoiled. Avoid that one and the egg sushi, which I thought would just be a piece of scrambled egg on a ball of sushi rice. But the egg had a lot of sugar in it and it tasted like old ginger. It was just plain bad. If you're going to go with the AYCE, stick with the salmon, tuna, and white tuna. The kani salad is also pretty good.
This is Kagetsu in a larger space. I've been a regular at Kagetsu for a couple of years and was sad to see it move a little further away. But, I will continue to support the owners of the restaurant. The sushi is still on point and now they have an all you can eat menu to compete with Sake and Oh Sho Sushi. If the restaurant is packed, you can expect a wait for your sushi.
