This is a cute spot in bay ridge, cleaner than your average Chinese spot so I was excited to try it. However, it was just okay. I ordered a wonton noodle, which came in a plastic container and was minimal… we tried the steamed dumplings (xiao long bao) and they took quite a while and just shouldn't be ordered at a place like this. Should have tried fried dumplings or something. Seems decent enough but the noodles are a bit small and flavorless…
Eh, not much to really say except mediocre experience. Not very "authentic" for lack of a better word
Had this place bookmarked for awhile and ticked it off the list when my dad and I were looking for a place for lunch. It's not a huge place, but doesn't need to be, as it looks like they do mostly takeout and delivery (according to the guy we spoke to, their delivery range extends all the way to 17th or 18th avenue!).
We ordered three things – the pan fried pork dumplings, the the Indian pancake, and the beef noodle soup. The Indian pancake came first. It was basically like a scallion pancake (without the scallions) and filled with curry chicken. Not bad. The fried dumplings were weird. They were half pan fried (only one side was crunchy), they were more round than long (more like soup dumplings), and weren't as good as Brooklyn Chinatown (or Manhattan). Kai Feng Fu in Brooklyn still gets my vote for best in NYC. The beef noodle soup at Kathy's was okay, but kind of bland. Hand Pull Noodle and Dumpling House on 18th ave is better, so if that's close enough to you, order delivery from them instead.
I do appreciate that they offer a free milk tea with Yelp check-in, but probably won't be returning. It's a sign of the times for Bay Ridge to expand their cuisine options (mostly for white people), but hey, whatever sticks.
A dumpling place not in the middle of Chinatown and it's in the middle of Bay Ridge. A good idea. Although the dumplings here are not as cheap as some places in Chinatown, which are really cheap.
I ordered the chicken & pork dumplings with carrot juice and a scallion juice. Make sure you check in to get free small hot milk tea with a purchase.
Don't expect your food to come out right away. They take the time to make the dumplings. Enjoy your milk tea while you wait. Great milk tea. Really hot!! That hit the spot on a really cold day.
The scallion pie- scallion and pepper was not bad. It was warm and fluffy. I think it needed more scallion flavor
The chicken and pork dumplings with carrot juice- pork, carrot, red & pepper was really good. The dumplings are boiled. I've never seen an orange dumpling before. Very juicy and it had good flavor. It wasn't greasy. A very healthy dumpling.
When it comes to the dumplings, this place is little bit healthier. The dumplings are still tasty.
Been walking past here for years literally and decided to try some dumplings today. Just the word itself dumpling is quite a term of endearing. Hey rthere sugar dumpling let me tell you something. Sookie sookie!! Lol
Well these dumplings are not that endearing, ok but barely passable.Tried the Vegetable Dumplings which had more wrapper skin compared to filling ratio. Really doughy and pedestrian.
Service was fast and friendly but man not sure if I would come back for more dough!! I am used to dumplings packed and plump.
Maybe next time I will try something different but I am pretty optimistic they can do better than my usual spot on 8th avenue Chinatown.
Wow what a great spot in Bay Ridge! Great variety of dumplings and drinks! Their juicy pork buns are not to be missed! I've had Joe's Shanghai, Nan Xiang dumpling house, Shanghai cafe and even dumplings from Shanghai and this is quite comparable.
These are the biggest soup dumplings I've had in NYC. The soup is not as flavorful as Nan Xiang but still worth trying. While I waited for my food I noticed they take a while because they make it fresh from scratch!! I saw them pressing the dough in the little window by the menu. It's great to see that the food was made on the spot and not taken from the freezer.
The juicy meat with steamed bun reminded me of the spicy lamb cumin burger from Xi'an Famous Foods. The bread and flavors are quite similar. It's about a dollar cheaper than Xi'an.
Don't forget to check in for a free hot milk tea! Be sure to ask for sugar, it was a bit bitter when I drank it.
P.S. Credit card minimum is $10!
Maybe it's my fault for expecting too much. For such a special place like this, the neighborhood should appreciate. They server really good quality food and variety of dumpling. I like the noodle a lot.
The face it's really nothing special for me. I would go to 8th ave for much better and cheaper selection. The pork soup dumpling they made here is lack of flavor and can use more filling. As for the beef dumpling, I honestly can't feel the meat.
You know one thing that I feel like Bay Ridge lacked when I first moved here was the amount of quality asian food. I saw this place while driving down 3rd avenue when I had to stop by to check it out. Like many have mentioned, it's definitely a take-out and delivery place more so than a sit in place (but they do have limited seating inside which is kind of a self-service deal).
I have to start off by saying that the food tastes really clean and fresh. You could see when you order that in the back they are rolling the little dumplings once you order. Yes — they're made to order! They have also a ton of other stuff on the menu that's worth checking out.. they have some pork/beef buns that almost kind of look like gyro's. Definitely worth trying, especially because they're so cheap! (I think 2 for $5)?
The price is pretty good for what you're getting — also, if you pick up or eat in, don't forget to check in on Yelp for a free milk tea! It's really tasty!
I've been here on three occasions. Each time was enjoyable and consistent which I can appreciate. The service is always friendly. I love good dumplings, especially pan fried pork. They take time to make your dumplings so it's not exactly grab and go, but it's worth the wait. By time I mean 10 minutes or so. Compared to other dumpling restaurants in Brooklyn i.e. the ones on 8th or 7th Ave in Sunset Park, the dumplings are fresh, juicy and the perfect portion. "Guiltless" dumplings – I'll take that, the wrap/skin wasn't heavy at all. My mouth was happy!
I'll be back for more of Kathy's Dumplings. A girl can never get enough pork!
