  1. I went for the prime rib, a favorite cut since I was a kid, and enjoyed it but don't feel it is fair to compare with other top NYC steak houses.  Prime rib is a cut often to be avoided at top restaurants, you don't get as much value from using prime meat as you do with a steak.  I was just dying for a good Prime Rib and had heard Keens had the best, was not disappointed.

Started with the bacon and it was very good.  Unlike other steakhouses, you actually get three slices so it is a real portion and it is good (very rarely do I say bacon is not good).

I had the prime rib and it is huge, probably over 24 ounces.  Cooked perfectly medium rare, which is hard to do with prime rib.  Nice balance of cap meat and the main meat, enough of both.  Also enjoyed the horseradish au jus, though would have liked the option of traditional au jus.

Creamed spinach was also good.  Not too much cream, you still felt you were eating healthy with the dish.

Overall would go back again for prime rib and eventually would like to try the steak.

  2. Nice setting and good place to come to in New York.  Within walking distance of Times Square and good friendly staff.
Had the filet and the flavor and sear was great.  I enjoyed my steak and the vegetables with it are cooked well.  Overall A Good steak place in the city.

  3. With 1,500+ reviews, I'm just adding my voice to the chorus of YUM. Hubby and I have been here a couple time. Great service and great food. The Caesar salad is a stand-out!  It's not like most Caesars… It's tangy and creamy. A must-have. We both were surprised at how truly tasty the mutton chop is. I love the filet (what's not to love?). Hash browns… Yes!  Be sure to make your reservation far in advance!

  4. If I was basing this just on the T-Bone, this would be a 4. I was super looking forward to this place but sadly it just didn't hit the mark for me.

So I read some article about the mutton chop here and immediately bookmarked this as a place I needed to try. My dad was in town so I figured that'd be a good time to come knock this off my list.

Ambiance: Has that old steakhouse feel. Very cool, pipes on the ceiling, great deco, bad ass tiger painting on 2nd floor.

Drinks: Had a Pimms Cup based on another reviewers post which was too sweet and a Manhattan which the balance was way off on, but it was strong at least. But yeah, didn't like either of my cocktails 🙁 My dad was a fan of Captain something which was a hoppy tap beer he enjoyed.

Service: Competent, although I sat with an empty drink for way too long.

They provide complimentary veggies (which is boring as eff and reminds me of wing night) and dip with some olives. For some reason it comes with ice cubes on it which I thought was hella weird. The dip is pretty average. Wish the bread came with options as I wasn't a fan of it (quite hard) although my dad loved that it had a hard crust, so to each his own.

    Food:
App: Bacon – pretty good. A buddy told me it was better than Luger's bacon, but I would disagree with that assessment. Definitely tasty though and comes with some greens to cut it a bit which is nice.
Sides: Fries – lil too dense for me liking. Like my fries fluffy inside. Broccoli/Cauli: not bad, nothing to write home about

    Mains:
Mutton chop – The reason I came here. Ehhhhh. It comes out looking amazing and sits impressively on the plate. The caveman in you just wants to howl and grab this thing with two hands and go to town. Beyond looks tho: This thing is heavy on fat which is NOT rendered. We're talking thick pieces which you have to cut off. I ordered it MR which is how I take my steaks, but I think it would have been better off as a medium. This thing is also awkward to cut as it's tall. Flavor wise, I dunno, I love lamb but this just didn't do it for me. I had some leftover and brought it home and broiled it which helped as even with 8 minutes in the oven the middle was still medium rare (albeit I didn't place it as close to the flame as I normally do as I didn't want to light everything on fire with all the fat in there). I was surprised they put the two wing looking things in the bag for me as it looked like just 2 pieces of fat. But surprisingly there was meat in there which I sizzled the fat down on (a copious amount) and came out to be quite tasty.  Comes with a vinegary escarole.
T-Bone – pretty damn good and cooked perfectly. Very heavy on marbling, so make sure you eat healthy before coming here lol. Almost a little too fatty for my liking, but it's a nice piece o meat.

Tab came to about $240 (incl tax n tip).
Overall: my dad had the better of the meal and he still thought it wasn't worth the price tag.

  5. For a steak guy, I'm surprised I haven't been here until this year. Love the atmosphere here.

The chops and steaks here are massive.

They had a different name for the baked clams but they were just baked clams. For the price, it was just eh.

The creamed spinach was good but it's not Peter Luger or Wolfgangs good.

The hash potatoes were crispy, buttery and delicious.

The prime rib was massive and delicious. Lots of flavor but I'm a porterhouse kinda guy. I like my steak salty, buttery with a nice crust.

Don't get me wrong, this is still a fantastic steakhouse and I still loved everything about it.

  6. Came here for Father's Day and had an awesome experience! The atmosphere looks like a speakeasy – it's dimly lit with smoking pipes lining every inch of the ceiling. They give you a complimentary veggie platter with fresh blue cheese dressing and a bread basket. Our waitress, Nancy, was outstanding – she refilled our bread basket at least 6 times and kept the blue cheese dressing coming. My phone died on me and they provided me with a phone charger. Just great service.

We ordered the seafood platter as an appetizer. I don't eat raw clams or oysters but the shrimp was very good. For my meal I ordered the filet mignon and lobster – it was to die for. Best cut of meat I've ever had. It was so soft – you could slice it with a butter knife. The coarse salt on top really complemented the meat. Lobster was perfect too. We also order a la carte sides of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes – both were just okay. For dessert we got the creme Brûlée and the carrot cake. Creme brûlée was excellent – carrot cake, not so much.

Yes this was an extremely expensive meal but it was also extremely delicious and the service can't be beat!

I'm giving 5 stars for the filet mignon, atmosphere and service.

  7. My dad was looking forward to going to Keen's weeks before our trip to NYC. He would constantly show me blog posts and articles about how Keen's is one of the top rated steakhouses in America. Talk about building up the hype. We happened to be flying into the east coast on his birthday, so we made arrangements to have his birthday dinner at Keen's. Our flight from Oslo ended up delayed and we arrived 6 hours later than expected. Thankfully, my mother arrived in the US before us on a different flight and was able change the reservation. We stepped into keens at around 10pm, expecting to be a nuisance. While we didn't end up seated in the Teddy Roosevelt room, we were happy with our table in the lounge area; the other rooms had closed for the night. We were happy just to be there, honestly.

Like other steakhouses, I felt as if I were entering a cave. The ceilings aren't particularly high and it was rather dark, but it's all about the ambiance I guess. Keens is known for their pipe collection (like Bilbo Baggins kind). They line the walls and ceilings and make for an interesting dining experience. Apparently you can even purchase some antique pipes if you're into that sort of thing.

The waiters were nicely dressed, very polite and we ordered right away. We decided to share a couple salads, a porterhouse steak for 2 and some mashed potatoes. For dessert, I had the berry one. The food was delectable. The salads and dessert were alright, but the steak and mashed potatoes were great. They even give you bread and a little veggie plate to start off with.

I'm a fan. If I'm ever in New York again, I'll be at keens. My dad's birthday ended up a success thanks to Keen's accommodating our delayed flight 🙂 and the steak was on point. Highly recommended!
