I have dined at the many Korean restaurants that have cycled through this particular property but KHG is by far the best.
While the decor has not changed much the menu has…. focusing on the aging and quality of it's meats this restaurant has found it's niche among the dozens of Korean Restaurants in the Edison area offering table grilling.
We ordered the beef combo for 2 and a Mandoo dumpling app. The banchan selection was extensive and for the most part largely….. forgettable except for the Pogi Kimchi which was freshly made and some of the best I've tasted.
The combo came with the always welcomed steamed egg, kimchi stew with a spattering of clams, marinated chuck, sliced brisket and a excellent prime rib eye steak aged for 4 weeks, more than enough food for 2 hearty diners.
The dumplings and it's soy based dip was nothing to write home about but still satisfying in that familiar and comfortable way. Then the glowing red coals and oiled grill hit the table with the lightly marinated sliced chuck to follow.
Aromatic, fatty and expertly cut the chuck sears quickly and when wrapped in a crisp chilled red lettuce leaf layered with some spicy pepper soy paste, rice, kimchi, raw garlic, fresh jalapenos and thinly sliced scallions you'll find a perfect marriage of texture, taste and char.
Our waitress kept hovering but after I satisfied her that I was more than able to time the meats on the volcano hot grill without totally incinerating them she finally left us to our meal.
Next came that beautifully marbled aged rib eye and thinly sliced brisket. both hit the grill at the same time with the brisket reaching it's prime temp in less than a minute to be consumed over rice with more of that great kimchi.
The now medium rare rib eye was tender with a nice almost tangy after taste….this is very well aged meat with minimal seasoning needed to let the taste shine through. I find that it picks up some residual seasoning from the previously grilled cuts and along with the fat mushroom now sprouting it's earthy water and crisp grilled sweet potatoes a memorable steak experience.
Our dinner selections was not your typical Korean, over the top parade of spicy, garlicky taste sensations but more subtle of taste and textures that is atypical in such a dining venue….. a fine steak dinner and well worth the effort and expense.
Stumbled across this place on handy dandy Yelp and thought it was worth a try. My sister and I were craving sushi so we decided to try out their menu. It's located in a little plaza right off Route 1 with their own parking lot. There is no outdoor seating. We walked in around 7 PM on a Friday night and they found a seat for us in 10 minutes. You have your choice of their normal menu, sushi or their Korean BBQ. They have an extensive list with some new innovative names and flavors. We ordered the American Dream, Dancing Eel and the Godzilla.
While we were waiting for the sushi the waitress brought out a few dishes for us to try: garlic sautéed spinach, soy lotus root with sesame seeds, soy sauce, fruit salad in what tastes like ranch dressing and kimchi. The fruit salad in ranch dressing is better than what you think. It was daunting but I ended up eating all of the fruits they had. I really enjoyed their kimchi among the other ones I've tried in the past because you can tell their baste has been pickled a while with the cabbage- it had a spicy kick to it.
The sushi came out with soy sauce and we asked for a side of spicy mayo. If you've never ordered the spicy mayo, get it! It'll change your life. Although this place is know for their Korean BBQ their sushi was on point. Display was beautiful, the fish was fresh (no fishy smell here!) and their flavors were innovative. On the outside of the American Dream and Godzilla, the wrap was nice and crunchy; perhaps fried panko added on.
After when we're waiting for the check, they brought out a small dish of fruits consisting of cantaloupe, orange slices and grapes. Needless to say, I was a happy camper.
Hands down, I have to visit this place again for their Korean BBQ and their normal menu. Can't wait!
