I have a love/hate relationship with this store. First off, I would never in a million years do my typical grocery shopping here. They are way too expensive and the selection of items is nil at best. Second, don't dare look for a sale item the week of the sale. I remember going here to get 12 packs of soda and they had a number of open cartons out with loose soda cans. There was even spilled soda in one part! They most definitely did not have enough for honoring a sale. I REALLY hate that & it's one major reason we do our grocery shopping outside of Ridgewood.
However, this store has come in handy for little purchases. For instance, I've gotten queso quesadilla cheese here. Smaller quantities of milk or chips were also sometimes cheaper here than elsewhere. If you're looking for things you can't get at a typical Long Island grocery store (especially if it's something of a Puerto Rican/Spanish fare), this place is worth a look.
It's okay as a neighborhood corner store but overall I'm not impressed & won't give a bad place 5 stars just b/c it's less sucky than the competition.
I've been frequenting this establishment through all it's incarnations. Back to when it was an A&P in the 80's. It's been through different changes and managements and I have to say, I really like what it is right now.
It's clean and a fairly good sized supermarket for the area. Yes, not as huge as Stop and Shop, but it's good enough. Yes, they are VERY expensive so to do your weekly shopping here, you'd go broke pretty fast. You have to learn how to shop here. If you are going to use this as your only shopping place, stick to looking through the sales circular and buying only what's on special. This Key Food is totally catering to the unfortunate Hipster population that has infiltrated Ridgewood. It's bad because they jack up the prices but a bit good in a way because they carry a lot of variety when it comes to groceries. Lots of vegetarian/vegan options, gourmet sauces, condiments, snacks, drinks, chips, etc, and lots of organic products. VERY nice alcohol selection as well! Produce is a hit or miss. Stick with a local fruit and vegetable store for that. They have a good meat section but it's very expensive. They have a separate vegetarian/vegan/organic frozen section which rocks. They sell so many items that you can't find in this area. Only in Whole Food's etc. They get major points for that from me. They sell Steve's vegan ice cream which I can only find in Brooklyn. They have a great selection of vegan yogurts as well. Items that I've never seen before.
My favorite sections are the deli and bakery section. Best Cuban bread that I've ever had. They sell every kind of Panera Bread soup that you can think of. They also carry my new favorite obsession, Hale and Hearty soups! They carry almost every kind! Their prepared food items are a hit or miss as well. Be careful of the dates!! They do have one prepared salad item that is so delicious. The crunchy vegetable salad is to die for! Broccoli, cauliflower, flax seeds, cranberries, carrots, red onions, etc. in a lovely, light dressing. I can eat that every day of my life. They do have good wraps, paninis and sandwiches but again, they are pricey.
I don't live in the area, but when I'm here I do like to stop in and see what sales they have. I also like to stock up on the items that I can't find elsewhere. It's convenience shopping.
