Tried the wings at the Vendy Awards Finalist and I can't wait to go back. At LIC Flea and these guys are very personable. The wings were crispy and juicy and seasoned very nicely. Looking forward to trying their signature dish next time. I'm a big fan now.
Tried their chicken with jasmine rice dish.
Their ginger sauce was slightly spicy and very gingery and it's right up my alley.
The jasmine rice was soft and slight chicken flavoured – one of the best rice I have had.
Chicken was soft – love the overall made up of the dish.
The store I went to was a temporary store on herald square, and will return to try their organic chicken wings they have on their menu.
First of all, this has the best chicken and rice dish ever! And they also have a small soup to go with your meal. I think it was less than $10. Let me explain without further ado. It comes with sliced vegetables, cilantro, and delicious ginger garlic sauce which you can have with your steamed chicken. OMG! The scent and the flavors are really intoxicating! I reckon this chicken is tender and is extremely soft to the point that it breaks apart with a fork. Yep, you can make away with just a pair of wooden chopsticks or a plain old plastic fork (spork maybe?).
It was like the freshest chicken that I have ever had in a long time. It felt like I was whisked to a faraway land where they raised farm fed organic chickens who eat grass. Not! I meant a heavenly dream like place where those who love chicken frolick and tickle themselves over how lucky they are to have tried this. I grow to expect that each time I get here, there is always a line when I visit, yet it is totally worth it if you are a fan of steamed chicken and rice. My coworker and I are crazy about this place. Each time we lunch, we go here and get their chicken and rice dish.
It is run by a lovely couple who are pretty down to earth and helpful. I love their Thai Iced tea as well. I haven't been to their main location (there is a restaurant also). I usually sit inside the Falchi building and attempt to fill my belly as fast as I can with this chicken yummy goodness.
***This is a review of their stall located within the Falchi Building right behind LaGuardia Community college. It is totally worth the walk from the 33rd street stop. Oh and did I mention they accept credit card? I came here when I realized multiple stalls are cash-only. Yes, I was in for a treat! Hope to see you again, Khao Man Gai!
since I work in this area now, and the dining options in my building leave A LOT to be desired for, I've been trying the various vendors in the adjacent Falchi Building.
so I tried their signature dish, and frankly wasn't that impressed.
as other reviewers state, you get a large portion of rice, and the chicken is tender but doesn't really have flavor to it. the ladle of broth is good, and the sauce (with strong hints of ginger and citrus) is great…but when lunch amounts to a big heap of rice, a bit of chicken, and 4 cucumber slices it was a bit of a letdown.
what they do right versus some of the other vendors here – they do the cooking on premises. some of the others are just outposts of restaurants, and you can tell they aren't making it fresh.
I'd try their other dishes, but I still have a lot of other vendors to try out so it's not high on my priorities queue.
I had their signature dish with wings, chicken and rice. It was pretty good. There's a lot of flavor in the chicken, especially the wings. Portions are pretty big, it's big enough to share with 2 people. I like the broth that comes with the dish, it's used for adding more flavor in the rice and chicken.
Firstly, the team serving at any Khao Man Gai outpost is absolutely darling–you'll be hard pressed to find nicer people than Eric and his wife. Secondly, the food they make is fantastic. It's a testament to the ideal that there's beauty in simplicity. Their famed dish, which their business is named for (Khao Man Gai) is light but filling, fresh and flavorful, and always memorable. Essentially it's warm rice with freshly cut, boiled chicken…it comes with a side of spiced ginger sauce, a few cucumber slices, and a tiny Thai soup to use as a palette cleanser. The price is fair consider the quality of the food you are receiving. Their Thai-style wings are also incredible–they easily achieve the perfect crispy and sauce to wing ratio. Their dry noodle dish, although not my sort of thing, is solid as well–add a Thai tea and it's a meal made in street fair heaven. If the Thai Food Gods are up there listening, hopefully someday you can grace us all with a Khao Man Gai storefront (make it three).
