“No it's no fancy sushi joint, but for take-out sushi, a solid choice.”

*3.5.
Stumbled upon this place with a friend when our Firm moved to this neighborhood and we were wandering and testing out potential new lunch joints.
Yes we found it odd that it is inside an apartment building but so what? Food is good and prices right for lunch. We got out with tea, water, lunch, tax and tip for under $14 each.
I was in town last week and bringing some friends. Couldn't remember if it was W. 55th or W. 54th and when I asked them to help me look for a sushi place (couldn't remember the name) on the South side of the block on the 2nd floor inside what looks like an apartment building, well their Eyes said it all. Thank goodness they trust me (or are too scared of me to say no to my idea!).
I got the bento box (as usual) but swapped for beef teriyaki. Soup to start and a lot of food. Another friend went bento (she couldn't finish it) and another went with two roll combo lunch special. Her rolls looked fresh.
Not that this sways my decision to continue as a customer, but we were sat next to my CEO. (if you've never been, these are TIGHT tables – seriously small place that crams as many peeps in as possible Note, I was on Vacation from work but no avoiding him… ). His sushi looked very fresh (fresher than I remembered it too). My group commented if he goes to this place, it must be A-OK.
I told them, he must have heard I frequent it and that is how he knew to go. 😉
beef negimaki bento box
chicken katsu bento box
salad, miso soup
6 california rolls
3 shumais
white rice
and meat.
solid, full lunch meal.
loved the orange slices.
The restaurant is on the second floor and looks more like an apt studio that was converted into a restaurant
The hot sesame water they served it was crazy hot and I almost burned my tongue and that pretty much set the stage for the shrimp teryaki bento box we got. The water was too hot, the teryaki too salty. I just fished out the shrimps and at them. The sushi was ok. same with everything else. I very very much doubt I will be coming back.
This is a tiny Japanese restaurant on 55th with a solid set of offerings, including a variety of Naruto rolls. The grilled squid in teriyaki was slightly charred and tender in a flavorful sauce. The soft shell crab was crispy and light with a good layer of batter; the sauce was slightly more tangy than I usually prefer but wasn't bad. The spicy scallop roll was very good, with the perfect amount of rice and a creamy filling. The sashimi appetizer came with 2 salmon, 2 tuna, 2 whitefish, 1 ebi, 2 kani, and 2 albacore. The fish slices were very generous and the tuna was especially good. The King Crab Naruto was solid but there was a bit too much cucumber although the crab itself was delish. Lure's Naruto is still the best. Service was very prompt and the window seating was a great option. A good, solid sushi option in Midtown.
I ordered seamless from here for a dinner combo and it came with Spicy Tuna Crunch, Spicy Salmon Crunch, & Spicy Yellowtail Crunch Rolls for $16.00. This did not come with a miso soup, which you normally get so I was a little disappointed since this was also 50 cents more compared to other spots I normally order from.
I won't really comment on the sushi except it was just all right. It wasn't too memorable so I wouldn't make the trek out here. There are better sushi spots to order from via seamless so I wouldn't order from here unless you really want to try it.
Gyoza – just all right too and nothing special.
I'd give this place a pass.
I ordered take out from here at about 12 pm on a Friday. It was ready in about ten minutes. I definitely recommend take out or delivery as they only have about 10 tables upstairs and I can see through the windows that it gets really busy and the place is tiny. They have great lunch specials. My boss is afraid to try sushi so I ordered the hibachi steak for him and it came with a ton of veggies and rice for only about $10. I got a couple rolls with soup and salad for about $10 as well. It's a great deal for lunch in this neighborhood.
Tucked away on the second floor of a nondescript building on 55th Street, Kiku sits hidden away, behind a locked door. You wouldn't even know it's an open restaurant. Inside, tables are strewn about randomly, and you might sit with your back to the sushi bar.
I sat in the corner, a nice spot with a beautiful view of the street below. I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki bento box. It came with miso soup (overly salty and miso-y), a salad and white rice, a spring roll (even though the menu said shumai), a tuna roll (tasted alarmingly fishy and wrapped with super soggy nori), and super overcooked and mushy salmon teriyaki.
Service is brusque, cold, and quick. An additional charge of $1 to substitute the roll was never communicated, and the menu description of my meal was outdated.
Uhm…not sure what to say about this place.
Got the 3 roll lunch combo (so I would have lunch for 2 days in a row)
You have to go upstairs and through a dirty/sketchy door to get in…I had a hard time actually getting in to pick up my food.
Eel Avocado – eel tasted OLD, like it was overcooked or covered in some kind of a hard sauce
Peanut Avocado – pretty good
California – eh
It also came with salad and soup. I did not touch the salad because the lettuce was pretty brown/gross looking.
Next day I went to eat my leftovers and literally could not eat them – the rice was rock hard! I am used to eating some sushi the next day and this is the first time I experienced this.
Not happy with the quality here. But it is cheap, if that's the most important to you.
