The best Jamaican beef patties! Flaky crust, full of meat (compared to Golden Krusty), and fantastic coco bread!
It's cash only (learned the second time when I bought 20 patties and froze 16 of them (ate 4 on the way back home).
The chicken patty was decent, but I wasn't a fan of the veggie patty (nor was the girlfriend).
Pro-tip: Slice up some fresh cheese (not the Kraft kind), cut open the patty, add the cheese in with the meat, and then heat it up again for a cheesy beef patty.
Super easy on the wallet and immensely filling, a spicy beef patty pillowed between the fresh spongy goodness of coco bread is a veritable carbohydrate carnival. You'd have to go to Jamaica to get food more authentic. Writing this review is making me fiend for some right now.
I heart this place so much. Best beef patties in the city. The chicken ones are my favorite. Love the coco bread as well. Cinnamon swirl bread is pretty on point too!!
I'm in this neighborhood for work fairly frequently and it has been pretty much impossible to get any vegan food aside from potato chips and candy from the may bodegas or a piece of fruit from the very occasional produce cart. So, when I happened upon Kingston Tropical Bakery and saw that they offer veggie patties, I got pretty excited, and after trying them, I got downright ecstatic!
As I've discovered that quite a few Jamaican/Caribbean restaurants actually get their patties from Golden Krust bakery, which is a reasonable option, but their patties are nothing to brag about. I was happy to find that Kingston makes all their patties in house, which is very apparent when you try one of them. The veggie patty I had was DELICIOUS! The crust was much softer and flakier than Golden Krust and the filling was much fresher and flavorful. The veggies were perfectly cooked and seasoned – not dry and plain, like patties at some restaurants.
I sure hope Kingston adds more veg options to their menu but for now, I'm quite content making a meal out of a few veg patties and a piece of fruit.
There is nothing like a real beef patty. There is nothing like a real beef patty that is only $1.00, served from behind a counter, in a corner store that you would miss if you weren't looking for it.
I feel bad for those who have to settle for Golden Krust. There is nothing like the real deal from a place in The Bronx. The patties are warm and delicious. The coco bread is as soft as a pillow. Everything is super cheap. There are a few drinks to choose from in some fridges and the staff doesn't really say much except for "what do you want" and the amount you owe. They're quick and everything is fresh. Definitely worth the trip if you're not in the area.
On a search for the best beef patty in NYC, I found this place on Yelp and decided to "pass by" by driving 30 minutes out of my way… but isn't that what all Yelpers do?
Anyway, the spice was great – good heat, and overall tasty!
…. but, I'm pretty picky (in life) … so, the patty dough was thicker, doughier and more bread-like than I prefer; usually i prefer the flaky crispy kind of patty – but to each their own.
If you're looking for a flakier patty, try Champion bakery a few stores down.
