This was near our hotel, so I swung by here to pick up some fruit on a weekend morning. The fruit was fine. My real issue is that a large swath of the food in this place does not have prices marked on it. That can be very misleading.
The first time I walked into their store about a year ago, I was accosted by multiple burly men who proceeded to bend me over to ensure that my bung was capable of enduring the ravaging Klein Ernest's prices were about to do to me. Thank you, gentleman. I don't think I could have survived the experience without you.
To be fair, the place is UBER clean. The shelves are always fully stocked. The staff are beyond willing to help you. The soups are good and reasonably priced, though there are better options in the area. And there is a very large variety of whatever you're looking to purchase.
Fortunately they're located right down the street from multiple banks where you can take out a small personal loan to be able to afford the Klein Ernest fare.
I don't know how they get away with these prices. To be in business this long, they must be capitalizing on tourists who don't know better and business peops who don't have the time to run up the street to less expensive markets. I pop in here from time to time just to see if, by a slim chance, they're having a sale. But I've never seen one sale in the past year of regular pop-ins.
Good presentation which is smartly executed for the area. But I personally think this place is a huge scam. Walk up 57th to Morton Williams or, better yet, take a crosstown or a nice walk to the Columbus Circle Whole Foods. Don't waste your money on these exorbitant prices.
