  1. Is Ko the greatest sushi place in the city? Nope. It is pretty decent, tasty, fresh and has mastered the art of fast delivery? You bettcha.

I live right near this place, and I have ordered delivery numerous times as well as ventured in more than once to sit down for dinner. The fish is fresh and clean, which is more than I can say for most places, and their bento boxes are perfectly paired and rather filling with all the right pieces to make it a great meal, and it's inexpensive to boot, making me a happy girl.

Basically, this place is standard utility sushi. If you want an amazing night out, with sushi that melts in your mouth, go elsewhere. I mean really, it's always the same old saying, you get what you pay for. For their prices, Ko is more than generous in the fresh fish department, they have crisp fresh salads with standard ginger dressing, a good miso soup (has anyone ever had bad miso soup?), the chicken teriyaki is more than passable and I have ordered the tempura on more than one occasion even though it leans to the mediocre side of things (read: not crispy enough).

It's a great little neighborhood joint and I am happy it is so far east to make it convenient for us East Yorkville folks.

Thanks, Ko, for letting me be lazy once again and not make much of an effort to go out to eat!

  2. They have an error on the menu… masaga.
What the h is masaga? Confused, I googled it on my phone. Masaga is a rugby player from New Zealand. Why would my sushi contain masaga?
I asked the waiter to clarify and apparently they meant.. tobiko (flying fish roe).
They specialize in lots of fake rolls here too.
I had the sushi platter for $15 which came with miso soup. It was ok, not amazing.

  3. Solid quick sushi lunch. I had the maki special and got two rolls that were very good. Staff was helpful and pleasant.

  4. Short, sweet, and to the point:

    1) Red Dragon roll – good (I'm a sucker for soft shell crab)
    2) Uni – ok, not great (excellent uni not only melts in your mouth, but has a slightly sweet taste – lacking here)
    3) scallop – I liked it, despite the waitress's attempt to denigrate it as "frozen" while trying to up-sell the live scallop special (5x the price), (boy, is she in for a suprise when she learns of that a majority of sushi-grade tuna is beet red only because of a carbon monoxide infusion!)
    4) yellowtail – borderline (the dab of wasabi helped, but more fishy than I would've liked)
    5) bonus:  free ice cream / canned lychees

    Overall, an average sushi joint.

  5. First off, KO holds a some sentimental value for me since it was where my gf and I had our first date 2+ years ago.

But don't come to KO expecting to be blown away by awe inspiring, state or the art Japanese cuisine. They more or less have your typical appetizers and a pretty solid selection of sushi, sashami and other prepared entrees. They even have a few hibachi dishes which I tried a year or so ago and was pretty tasty. I really don't get these reviews saying KO's fish isn't fresh? I think all their fish is fresh and tasty as could be. I never had a problem with it and always left satisfied. Again, if you're looking for some cutting edge, culinary sushi/sashimi creation – try sushisamba or one of those type of places.

I feel like it never gets packed in here so service has always been great. Their cold sake is great with sushi and sashimi and at $10/bottle is a good value I feel. The pork wasabi steamed dumplings and the tuna tataki were big hits with my girlfriend and I last time we came. Plus, KO is a good date spot; as previously mentioned, it's never really packed, it's intimate and dimly lit.

Although I'm not on the UES as often as I use to be. I'll continue to come to KO for a solid Japanese dinner every so often.

  6. Great Sushi! Friendly staff if you sit at the sushi bar they seem to always send out a free crab salad or in my case (since I am allergic) a cucumber avocado salad on the house.

Inexpensive and happy to make anything that you can dream up. This place is a neighborhood treat.

Bento box filled to the brim for under $15! Great lunch specials, big portions, and excellent Cooked food too. VERY QUIET.

    Romance Factor:  4
    Hobnob Potential:  1
    Destination Rating:  5

Strong Suggestions: Spicy tuna crunch roll with avocado and asparagus tempora.  Also try the deep fried green tea ice cream.

    ———– UPDATE 6/2007 ————————-

Have been coming here for years ordered delivery for a party that we had only spent $150 and had waaaay too much sushi.  VERY reasonable prices for great quality.  Owner is very sweet.

    ———— UPDATE  1/2008 ————————-

Came in here the other day and the place was PACKED!  Yeay Ko. Looks like other people in the neighborhood are discovering this place too.  Great quality — if you sit at the sushi bar they give you a complimentary crab salad.  Then at the end of your meal you can look forward to a nice little bowl of fruit & some cute gum that tastes amaaazing — but then you have to spit it out 5 minutes later.  :o)

  7. Went to ko sushi because my boyfriend is a veggie but I was craving chicken katsudon and this was the only place that I could find with sushi AND chicken katsu don. We were going to go to the one on 70th and second (with better reviews) when he told me that there was another on 87th and York. Checked the menu on menupages just to make sure they had both and saw that the chicken katsu don was less expensive at this location than the one further downtown.

My boyfriend will eat anything and not care how it tastes and he said his sushi was good. My chicken katsu don was nothing to write home about but what REALLY pissed me off was that menupages had listed the price as $8.95 but it was actually $11.95. Had I known, I probably would've forsaked my stubbornness and just gone for another cuisine. Won't be returning back here; I've found cheaper and better chicken katsu don elsewhere.
