Pipin' hot miso soup. Two delicious, mouth-satisfying maki rolls. Hot tea. All for $8. That's quite a deal for this area.
I ordered the yellow tail with scallions and the spicy tuna roll. Within minutes, my food came. The rice was sweet and vinegary, the fish was fresh and still had that yellowtail chew.
I ate my meal within minutes too. I should have ordered more food, but I was in a rush and didn't feel like sitting and eating all day.
Next time, I'll order the 3 maki rolls with miso soup for $11, because I left still hungry.
Cheap lunch-special sushi will always be my baby. Or at least, my maybe.
Sure I have the occasional, thrilling tryst with the Nakazawas and Ichimuras and Kyubeis of the world, but those are one-night things, I promise. Like, promise promise.
$8 two roll special, $11 three roll special, $15 two special roll special, thanks for taking me back every time. You are there for me, Monday through Sunday. You dont make me clean up first when I come in wearing my gym clothes. You dont mind a quick in and out thing. When I have time to stay and cuddle, and read or talk, youre down for that too. And you NEVER rush me to get out the door.
You may not be the hottest stuff of my dreams, but you are my waking reality, a good lunch date, week in and week out. Those dinners come with too many strings and expectations anyway.
I will always call you back, want you when Im perusing Seamless on a sick day, and return to you. No matter what.

No seriously. When Chipotle's line is out the door, and I want a reasonably healthy 25-minute (sit-down!) lunch in the UWS 70's, this is my ticket. Theyre good about service at Kumo especially if you tell them of your time constraints, the hot tea pours freely. Every neighborhood needs a crappy, Chinese-owned sushi joint, and Kumo is one of the better ones in value and taste.
By far the best sushi I have had in a while. I had the crunch spicy crab, Philadelphia roll, Alaskan roll, spicy tuna, Shrimp tempura, and Spicy crunch tuna. It was during the lunch special ($24 total) and came with two salads. I ate very well today 🙂
Kumo is a solid 3 star sushi place. Let me explain.
I've been to Kumo 4 or 5 times now. In my opinion, their dine in is better than their take out.
This time I had a lunch special – two special rolls for $15. I got the sweetheart roll and the rainbow roll. None of the sushi from this place is incredible special, but it's cheap and fast and fairly reliable. $15 for two special rolls or $8 for two regular rolls (plus a soup or a salad) is pretty cheap in my opinion. Nothing is gourmet or particularly well crafted, but it gets the job done.
Unfortunately the service here is sort of lacking. I think that they're attentive but they just aren't very nice. No one greets you or thanks you for anything, which has always kind of bothered me as a repeat customer. The people there want nothing to do with you. The experience doesn't really make you feel like a "valued" customer, if you will.
All in all, Kumo is okay. I will probably be back.
If you are a true sushi lover of quantities, they offer All-You-Can-Eat Sushi special, and have plenty of sushi menu to select from. It is a bit pricey at $27.50 per person, but if you are super hungry for sushi, it might be worth your time and money.
They look small from the outside, but has more than enough table seating at front and back, with counter seats at the sushi counter as well. The quality of sushi was surprisingly good, as I was not expecting a good quality sushi, so it was good.

For me this is the best sushi in town. Great options, a wide variety of rolls and special rolls as well, top quality fish and seafood and unbeatable prices. $14 specials that are to die for, many come with lobster! and you can order 2 special rolls for $20 for take out. Same with the regular rolls: many many choices including the crunchy lobster that is incredible, 3 rolls for $14.
The top choices are:
Pink lady
Sweet heart
Crunchy lobster
Godzilla
Tokyo
And many more
They deliver but it kind of varies in the hour, weather, mood and zodiac sign of the guy who makes the order. Don't know what happens but you have to catch them in a good day.
Top quality food!
I didn't get the all you can eat sushi, because you can't get sashimi and they charge you if you don't eat the rice. I didn't think I could eat enough to make it worth the price and the deal didn't include all the kinds of sushi that I like.
I got a couple of hand rolls and sashimi squid, red clam, some uni, soup – a couple of other things (can't remember now). The sushi was average to good. The service was a little cold and unwelcoming.
All in all, everything was fine – nothing was bad, nothing blew my mind. This is like most of the NYC sushi joints – a middle of the road experience.
I have been coming here on and off since before it was Kumo. Back then is was named Kinoko and it was the second sushi restaurant I had eaten at and I came often for the AYCE sushi special. Over the years the quality eventually degraded and I stopped coming.
The sushi was "ok". Which would be ok if it were less expensive. The fish did not seem as fresh as I have come to expect and the rice was either a different grain or perhaps slightly undercooked.
With so many options in NYC I probably will not be returning anytime soon.
