  1. Disappointed by Hawthorne's lack of restaurants with vegetarian options, I was pleased to find Kurumi nestled in an unassuming strip mall on Goffle Road.

Upon entering, I was eagerly greeted by a man in sushi chef attire, and he was happy to help me navigate the large, fold-up menu "poster", which includes photos of almost every dish.

When I told him I was a vegetarian, he gladly explained what I could and couldn't eat. He even pointed out the fact that the broth used in Kurumi's udon soup contains anchovies and that I should steer clear of it. I appreciated that, since I wouldn't have known any better.

I ended up ordering a wide variety of items so that I could sample a lot of things from the menu: two avocado/cucumber rolls, a tofu teriyaki box (comes with a little green salad and three veggie dumplings), and vegetable tempura. The order totaled a little more than $22, which is more than I'd like to spend for lunch, but all that food could serve two hungry people and maybe three light eaters.

Everything was fresh, carefully packed, and delicious. I could tell that my food was made with care. I really liked the tofu teriyaki, which seems to be a recent addition to the menu. I would definitely order this again. Both the sushi and the veggie tempura were above average, and I would recommend them to my vegetarian friends.

Overall, I think that Kurumi is a wonderful neighborhood gem!

  2. This is a nice little non-descript place in Hawthorne. It's small but comfortable, a little drafty but nice.

It's family owned, the husband is the sushi guy, the wife cooks in the back along with a an older lady.

The highlights were the squid salad special with seaweed salad, really fresh and had a nice meaty taste to it, thinly sliced squid; the spicy tuna roll seemed fresh, the rice was delightfully moist; the miso soup was pretty delicious too, not watered down at all.

I wasn't too impressed with the freshness of the striped bass, a tad fishy.

    The spicy mayo is tasty.

If you're looking for authentic japanese sushi, wrong place; quick cheap rolls, this could work.

  3. I hadn't been here in at least 10 years, but realized it was on my way home the other day. So glad I called in an order! The quality has improved quite a bit, but the prices remained more than reasonable. Nice people, quick service. Really take out only although I believe I saw a couple tiny tables.
