I always get breakfast here and this time got lunch and breakfast items. The food is good and cheap!
The beef empanadas are very good however its more of a mash of potato and ground beef, not just beef – still good tho. I want to include that about 3 years ago I ordered a tray of cheese empanadas for International day at my job and the empanadas were pretty much empty. I have never gotten a cheese empanda here for myself tho. During my last visit I got 2 beef empanadas, a cheese arepa, chicharon, pernil, arroz moro, and beans – all for about $13 and fed 2 people. SO GOOD. Customer service is good and quick.
2.5 stars for nice people with mediocre food.
I'm so disappointed. La Costena came so highly recommended that I was psyched to finally have a chance to get there while it was open… but the food quality was just not great.
The lunch dishes are served cafeteria-style from a very limited menu. Given my few options, I got the beef stew with yellow rice, and a cheese pastry. The rice was well cooked and unseasoned, which I believe is traditional. However, the beef stew lacked any flavor. Although the potatoes were cooked to perfection, the beef was dry and one of the 3 small chunks I was given was a piece of bone, devoid of meat. There were really no vegetables in the mix, and the sauce was just bland. I had high hopes for the cheese pastry, but it was similarly bland and really not good at all.
Service was nice (both women with whom I spoke were bi-lingual – big help!) and fairly fast. Parking can be a problem at peek hours.
If you're really craving this kind of cuisine, give it a shot… but I wasn't impressed.
