Fast service and good food. The guacamole was tasty and the chips were warm and crisp. They have mole tamale which was good, but it was a little bit on the dry side but seriously for $2 I can't complain. The mole enchilada was tasty and the rice and beans was also delicious. They also make their own red and green sauce which is always a plus for me. Give me something spicy and I am happy.
Famed AP math educator Jaime Escalante once asked himself, "how do I reach these keeeds?"
Well he should have brought them here because the food is awesome (though I'm not sure how to use tacos to teach Calculus).
Note: the address is 4503 5th Ave. in Sunset Park, not park slope as the map currently indicates.
In any case, as a lover of Mexican fare, this is my favorite little stretch of Brooklyn when it comes to getting my beans on. You can't swing a Pinata without hitting a decent little eatery serving up good and cheap grub. In fact it's often just the little things that differentiate one spot from another… preferences for salsa, the flavor of a specific recipe, etc.
La Cucina hits all the right notes… good service, nice prices, large portions full of flavor, plus a bar. La Bamba. A positive plus a positive equals a positive, right Jaime?
You get, for starters, a basket of chips and nice, homemade tomato salsa. You can then choose from a variety of simple items such as tacos, tamales and tortas, to seafood dishes, fajitas and other big plates.
The tacos, for example, were large, brimming with flavor and topped with real guacamole for a mere $2.50 each. Someone in the kitchen likes to make sauces, so I'm excited to go back and try other dishes such as Mole Poblano, Pork Chops in Adobo Rojo and Camarones a la Diabla.
"People" said you can't teach advanced Math to kids at Garfield High. People also said you can't find good Mexican food in New York. Thanks to Senior Escalante and the Senioritas at La Cucina, those "people" have been proven wrong.
Carnitas burrito = $7.50 = The burrito wasn't too stuffed with "stuff" and the flavors are well balanced. Tamale = $2.00
I'm not sure if I was just really hungry but I really liked the food here! It looks like a "mom and pops" place. (It's a good sign when the waitress and the staff speaks Spanish.) It's hard to find good Mexican food in Manhattan, but if you travel to brooklyn and find yourself in this area, don't hesitate to come here!
You want to know why this place stands out among other Spanish restaurants? Two reasons:
1. The food is awesome. 2. They accept credit cards.
Reason #1 implies that you should come here. Reason #2 implies they don't cheat on their taxes.
Other than the fact that the food is spectacular, they deliver, and accept credit cards, it's pretty standard Mexican fare, so on to the food reviews:
Carne Asada Tacos: A Carnitas Tacos: A Pastor Tacos: A Enchilada Tacos: A Pollo Tacos: A Chorizo Tacos: A
These are authentic Mexican tacos. Not gringo (or Chinese) tacos, which are brimmed to the rafters with "stuff". These tacos are minimalistic, and emphasis is placed on both the meat and the few toppings, whereas in gringo tacos (e.g. Taco Bell) the main attraction is the amalgam of toppings into a soft mushy mass of taco shell/tortilla plus taco filling. Don't get me wrong — I love that mushy mass, but these tacos are not that. They are minimalistic and delicious.
Minor side note: their "guacamole" was actually sliced avocado, but the tacos were so good, I won't hold that against them.
We will definitely be ordering more from them in the future, and I will update this review when we do.
