Coconut macaroon was huge, but wasn't great. Maybe we came too late in the evening and had a bad batch but it was too hard and stale. Their selection and aromas are quite enticing, however, so we might give it another try if we're again in the area.
Everything at La Delice looks unbelievably appetizing. Unfortunately the items we've tried (cakes and cupcakes) aren't remotely worth the calories as everything tastes old and/or of cheap ingredients
I wish this place would reduce it's offerings and go for quality instead of quantity. Until that happens I suppose we're just going to have to make do with my sad baking skills.
My friends and I were walking around and passed this place. The store displays are full of adorable cupcakes- it was the rainbow frog ones that drew us in! There are so many different types of cookies and cakes here, the store has an old bakery type of feel that lets you know they've been here for awhile. Unfortunately, some of the baked goods look kind of old as well. The three of us split a rainbow frog cupcake, made of pink buttercream- it was really sweet! Good but too sweet and the cupcake part seemed to crumble and the cake to frosting ratio was off. Nice to try once, this place.
This is really one of the gems of Manhattan. I have been coming here since I was few years old, when it opened in the early 1960s. If you want to experience how good things used to be, this is the place.
Old school coffee, that will really wake you up.
Real authentic actual pastries, the way they were always meant to be.
Enjoy!
Tried their pistachio cake ($4), Napoleon ($4 for the bigger ones), and mocha and raspberry macarons (2 for $3). Didn't like the Napoleon because the texture is too soft and the custard is too thick.
Also bought a rum ball ($2.25) but haven't eaten it yet as I typed this review.
Overall it's okay and not too expensive. Will try their cheesecakes and cookies next time.
What's not to like about an old corner bakery from which the heavenly scent of cookies, cakes, and other treats wafts through the street, momentarily catapulting you into a world where everything is sweet?
I stopped in today because by 3PM I had eaten nothing and needed to get a new tank for my Kangertech K Box at Henley, a block or so south. I went in partly just to get out of the cold but decided to buy a prune hamentashen ($3.50) and so glad I did.
They have big slices of coconut cream and carrot cake for $4.50. It's cheaper than a fancy bakery like Corrado (which I adore). This isn't French confectionary frou frou pastry, though they do have macaroons in an array of flavors.
You're not allowed to take pictures, which is quite odd. And the service is not exactly solicitous but the place smells like a heaven populated entirely by bakers and consumers of baked goods.
It's on the way to Mexico Lindo and near the Gramercy location of Henley, so I will probably stop in every time I'm in the area for a little treat.
When do you see bakeries like this anymore?! Especially ones that are open until 9p!
We had to stop in between having dinner across the street at Handcraft and going to New York Comedy Club. A very small shop, but we ordered about 6-8 cookies to go in different varieties, which cost about $3.50.
The cookies themselves were OK, some better than others. We had gotten some butter cookies with jelly and chocolate that were pretty good, and overall met my expectations. I'll definitely be keeping this place in mind when I need to bring a tray of cookies or treats to a party!
When I need a nice assortment of old fashioned holiday cookies to take to a party or for guests, this is the place I stop. They have years of experience so you can't go wrong. I've never been disappointed. They have a great selection. Everything is delicious. For home made cookies the price is right. I've never tried anything but the cookies. Everything else does look good though.
I'll take one of everything!! Happy holidays!!
