Queens can deliver some remarkable food and experiences, but once in awhile in order to get that experience you were really looking for you just need to put away the Yelp app and walk in the door and order. I took a chance this morning and scored.
This tiny little Colombian bakery appears to be run by a family but that's just a guess. I'd say the daughter is working the front, and mom and pop the kitchen. I passed on the menu and asked for steak and eggs. "No rice or bean?" she inquired. "Yes, si!"
And out they come, and they are fine. One bottle of sauce on the table, and it didn't come off the Sysco truck my friends. Green, vinegar and garlic taste. Guessing parsley and cilantro mixed with hot peppers? Decent kick, but high on flavor. It was spectacular on the eggs and rice and beans. Oh, and Colombian coffee black and you have a real working man's meal. The steak was thin, seasoned perfectly and satisfied.
May be seeing a trend. Same thing happened a few years ago but right across the street. A no name taco cart on my way to LaGuardia that knocked my socks off. Only later I check on Yelp and see it's a neighborhood favorite.
Good food is everywhere. Put down the device and just trust your instincts once in awhile. Especially in a neighborhood like this under the #7, you rarely go wrong.
La Fina is a small Colombian bakery in Woodside. It is not the biggest Colombian bakery in the neighborhood but is good quality. They have a variety of breads and desserts, all for under $3.00. They do serve hot stuff as well, such as a bandeja, empanadas, chicken soup, and sancocho. However, the baked goods are the reason to stop in. I like the Tres Leches cake here – very moist and sweet.
