  1. So this place might seem confusing at first because you don't know how/where to order, but don't fret! You place your order with one of the workers behind the stool area where all the food is placed. There isn't a really good place to stand and place your order, but wait patiently and eventually someone will take your order.

I came here during lunchtime and the place is packed, so service was slow, but surprisingly the waitresses have good memory and eventually what you ask for will be done. I sat in the bar stool conveniently in front of the food and people come and go. Not the cleanest place I've been too, but it sufficed. I had the joy of ordering the tilapia with rice & beans and plantains and the chicken soup.

The soup is phenomenal. For just 3.50, you get a huge entree sized bowl. The chicken is cooked really long and in turn super soft and yummy. It has a bit of squash, carrots, noodles, and some other vegetables. I love the taste when you combine it with some of the lime. The tilapia was average. It was a bit overcooked, but since they make it in big batches, it's understandable because it'll be hard to control. I really liked the sauce though it was sweet and creamy with a hint of coconut. It went really well with the beans that were also pretty soupy. Plantains are always a nice edition and they give you a huge portion of rice.

Love the concept of a Caribbean (?) diner! Cheap, good portions, and unique taste profiles.

  2. Whenever I am craving a decent cuban sandwich, I think of La Flor. Ironically, Pit Bill's song "I Know You Want Me"  auto plays in my head whenever I am craving it. It is as if the cuban sandwich is trying to lure me into eating it subconsciously.

    "Dale,
    one-two-three-four,
    Uno-dos-tres-cuatro
I know you want me (want me)" –   (YES I DO!! I WANT TO EAT YOU!)

God, I love that song! Sorry I got sidetracked. Now back to writing about food! tee hee. Their cuban sandwiches are really delicious, cheap ($4), and abundant. All the ingredients used to make this sandwich are fresh (they make their own ham and do not use those phony lunch meats you find in the delis). It is best eaten when it is fresh out of the panini press, and toasty.

Besides their delicious cuban sandwich, they also offer great breakfast options such as the Mangu, which is one of my favorite Dominican breakfast. Their juices are awesome too; especially their "Morir Sonando" drink  which basically is orange juice, milk, sugar, and ice. In addition, if you are lazy and don't want to cook for a party of 4 – I highly recommend that you order their meal combos, especially their porkchop combo ($15). The pork chop combo comes with 4-5 pieces of porkchops (w/ some nicely seasoned red onions), and a large order of rice, beans, maduras, and a 1 L of Pepsi. Their meal combos can feed a family of 4, and it's very delicious, cheap and very filling!

La Flor is very popular with the locals so the wait line to order and receive your food is really long. A quick tip is to call La Flor's ahead of time, and place a pick up. Orders are usually ready for pick up by 25-30 minutes.

  3. I think this place is still called La Nueva Flor, but I'm not sure and I don't feel like double checking before I write this review so whatever.  Yes, the sandwiches are really good.  Oh man, the garlic sauce or garlic mayonnaise or whatever garlicky goodness they put on the cubanos is amazing.  I also like that they have some baby cubano sandwich that is half the size for 2.50 or something..perfect for a little snack.  Yum baby sandwich. Recently, I also tried their flan which was also delicious.
What I really want to try, but haven't yet, is their hot plate dishes, which look really good.  Rice and meat, yum.
Service is pretty good, but I have a feeling they would be friendlier to me if I spoke Spanish.  Oh well.

  4. This is a good spot if you are a local. I came here for the lunch special and got a chicken and rice plate for $6. This lasted me for two meals and I was surprised because I usually eat a lot.  The plate came with beans and fried plantains which was a plus.

The lunch crowd was a ton of locals who had great looking plated. To be honest I wanted a different meat but had a communication barrier- my problem not theirs.

  5. Chicken and plantains! Get their $5 pollo special! Instead of rice, we just asked for more plantains! Juicy, tender and flavorful roast chicken with perfectly cooked plantains! This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall that locals frequently go to. The place is small and packed, but the food is delicious!

  6. I found this restaurant while I was just taking a stroll in the neighborhood of Harlem. I was craving Mofongo and I ran across this Carribean restaurant while I was walking. It's quite the tiny restaurant but truly will surprise you with how good it is! You can smell the flavor and cooking of homemade food as soon as you walk through the door. They have a variety of Caribbean food from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic , Jamaica and more. The portions are ENORMOUS with such a cheap price! Most dishes are $12 are less with a majority of them being $10 of less! I took a star away because it is a bit confusing on how to order. Everyone is kind of standing around in this tiny restaurant just waiting and it makes it hard to see where the line to order. I did see two people leave out of frustration of not knowing where to order and I'm assuming feeling ignored. Once I ordered my food finally, the food took about 15 minutes to make and it was worth it! It was so fresh and good! Next time I'm in Harlem, I'm coming back!
