Hands down one of, if not the best meal we had in NYC. The 'sister restaurant' to Clarkson next door, you can enter La Gauloise through their bar area. It may be a little on the small size, but they more than make up for that with gorgeous food and exemplary service.
My steak frites was far, far superior to the one I had a few weeks ago in Paris (yes, actual France). Medium rare and cooked to perfection, it was served with a bit of salad and hearty frites. Most of our group ordered it and we were so glad we did.
A few of us also had dessert – I opted for three flavours of ice cream (though be aware that a couple are actually sorbet, but it was still great).
As for the service, we were all served within a few minutes of each other and when we needed cabs home, one of the waiters stood outside for probably 20 minutes trying to hail us one. He probably got bollocked by his boss afterwards for that, but we really appreciated the gesture.
