Friendly service,at snails pace. Food is not all that. They carry a lot of Latin fried goods, the works, empanadas, alcapurrias/quipes.It wasn't what i was expecting and the owners are not Cuban, they're Dominican.
I want to give this place 3 stars, but I'm putting the fix in. Let's start off this is your average Dominican luncheonette. They serve all the perfunctory steam table dishes and lunch specials. arroz con pollo, rabo, pernil, cubano, habichuelas y pintos negros, pollo guisada etc…etc….
The place is a dump and the usual folks who eat here are from the neighborhood. You don't hear English spoken here at all, you don't see non Dominicans and Puerto Ricans eat here. That said I grew up in Sunset Park and happen to speak Spanish even though I'm Chinese. There are better places down the block to get most foods like a pescado frito but this place bar none has the best version of mondongo (tripe and cow foot soup) out of any of the places I've tried in NYC.
I lived around the block from this place in a slumlord owned brownstone for 7 years. I had a 1,200 square foot brownstone apartment complete with spiral staircase leading up to a cubbyhole storage area for $1,000 a month. Anyhow one very "stoned" summer I used my motorcycle as a mission to try as many version of mondongo in NYC as I possibly could. I tried like 40 different restaurants across 4 boroughs and none were better than the version made by La Havana.
For me its one of my most treasured meals to have on a cold day, a big bowl of their mondongo and a hot plate of their white rice. If you want to order it and try it its "da me un plato de arroz blanco y un sopa de mondongo por favor."
Their soup has no equal even though the place is a dump. Don't freak out if you get stared at speaking Spanish. The counter lady will appreciate your efforts though.
