I was so excited to hear about the opening of La Loba Cantina in my neighborhood. When I arrived, I was super hungry and ready to order everything. My girlfriend also has a similar appetite so we went with a bunch of options.
1. Guacamole & Chips: Chips were crunchy, fresh and warm- not oily. The guacamole was slightly spicy and deliciously creamy.
2. Tlayuda-Nopales: The ends of the tlayuda was super crispy but the middle was a little soggy from all the toppings. This was the first time I had cactus so I have nothing to compare it to, but I learned that I do not like cactus at all. For those of you who haven't had it either, the consistency and taste is very similar to okra but the cactus is a bit more squishy. I would definitely try this dish again sans nopales.
3. Stew: This was one of the specials of the day and one of the best things we ate. It was spicy and full of tender chicken and whole boiled corn kernels. Very tasty.
4. Chicken Tamale: The whole thing was a bit dry. The chicken was spicy but lacked any other flavor.
This place wins some extra points for service. Our waitress was very attentive without being overbearing.
Do you like mezcal? Like really like it? Then you owe it to yourself to go to La Loba. Much like how other bars have whiskey lists, La Loba has a mezcal list. Probably around 20 different bottles, and they offer flights as well.
I went with their Tres Manos (favorites) flight. Three one-ounce pours of Union, Ilegal Reposado and Fidencio Pechuga for $20. They were all good, but definitely went up in quality in the order listed. That was actually their cheapest flight, and they had ones going up to $25 and $30.
I also had a cocktail because it just sounded so damn interesting. It was the Santa Maria – made with mezcal, strawberry, arbol chilis, piloncillo, balsamic, angostura bitters and lime. I'll be honest – all the flavors ended up competing against each other and it really didn't taste much like any of the ingredients. Except for the spicy. You could definitely taste that. Wasn't a bad drink though.
We also had some bar snacks – chicharrones and the chips and salsa. They were a very affordable $3 each, but nothing to write home about.
Friendly bartender. And good times all around.
