I really thought this place lacked quality. The atmosphere and service was OK, but the food was kinda awful. The bread was alright, but when we asked for oil to dip the bread in they brought out the most bland tasting oil I've ever had in my life. It must have been cooking oil or something, but not meant for dipping. I ordered off the specials (lobster ravioli). I didn't like it one bit. The inside was chopped so fine you wouldn't have a clue it was even lobster, I can't be sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was frozen. The shrimp tasted like iodine. The sauce was forgettable. Just bad. My date ordered some seafood pasta dish with broccoli rabe and wasn't too thrilled either. Overall this place was a major disappointment and I will not be returning.
Gotta say, this place didn't impress me. The inside is nice enough with a large arched ceiling. The service is good, although the place was pretty deserted when I went. The food just wasn't anything special. I had the bucatini amatriciana, a fairly basic dish. The bucatini was good and the sauce itself was watery but had a decent taste. The few little onions had almost dissolved, and the pancetta was all fat. I know that the fat is integral to the dish, but they just put in a crappy cut of meat with no meat on it. I can understand that this wasn't going to be a fine dining experience to remember judging by the prices alone, but this could've and should've been better.
I came here a few Father's Day's ago and hadn't been back till recently. No I don't have any kids! Or at least I hope not. I was celebrating with my father. He loves this place so much, we came here on a weekday after Father's Day because they are not open on Sundays.
Old school Italian restaurant, which has the feeling that they love what they do here. The food is phenomenal. Love every bite. They have an amazing Hot Antipasto plate, which I highly recommend. If you don't have anyone to split it with, order the mini eggplant rollatini. The entrees are all rock solid. Though I come here for pasta dishes mostly. This place has one of the best Penne Alla Vodkas. That sauce is amazing. I also enjoy their Gnocchi and rock shrimp. It's essentially Gnocchi with small pieces of shrimp diced up. Great meal every time. Best part, is how inexpensive it is. Hands down one of the best bang for you buck Italian places in NYC.
For old school Italian newer rules don't apply. You judge the food and décor on sentiment and nostalgia. Graham Ave. is one of my fave drags- it combines the best of old and new Williamsburg and La Locanda is a throw-back from the old.
They make their own bread here- like Carmine's up the street. The bread is so good and goes perfectly with butter- you want oil oh well, just go with the butter.
My friend and I shared baked clams and stuffed mushrooms. Both $9 real cheap. I loved the mushrooms- simple in a nice marinara sauce. The baked clams tasted very fresh but could have sat under the broiler for a moment.
The circular eggplant parm. was perfect. $12.50 for skin on thin gooey mozzarella throughout plus pasta or salad side. Since we both ordered the eggplant parm. we got one of each. The salad was good with lots of balsamic vinegar and the linguine simple with that good marinara. You want new school- there are plenty new fangled Italian restaurants in the 'Burg- this one keeps it OLD school- roll with it!
