On a beautiful Saturday summer afternoon, I headed out to enjoy the perfect California-like weather disregarding the work that needed to be done because I didn't want to waste one of the few precious gorgeous days that we have on the East Coast inside.
I decided the warm weather made for a perfect reason to do a popsicle crawl. I love Mexican popsicles (aka paletas) because the lovely fruity goodness inside the cool icy prison transports a lowly popsicle to new heights. It was with some eager anticipation that I went to La Newyorkina at the Hester Street Fair.
The first popsicle I had was the hibiscus, which is one of my favorite flavors. There was a good intense tart hibiscus flavor, but I didn't care for the rather large ice crystals in the popsicle. It made the popsicle taste like something I would make in my own freezer.
The second popsicle I had was the coconut (another favorite). I wanted to compare this coconut with El Sabor's (see my review for Tortilleria Nixtamal). Unlike El Sabor's where the paleta was a rich intense creamy coconuty experience, La Newyorkina didn't have the same intense flavor. It was more on the lackluster side. El Sabor's appeared to be made with coconut cream, while La Newyorkina's was much thinner (coconut water?). There were also a few rather large shavings of coconut in the paleta, which were difficult to eat and didn't add anything to the paleta. I definitely think the hibiscus was the better popsicle.
On a hot day, a popsicle is always a welcome treat.
I've walked by this little cart a million times and I finally had the appetite to give one a try. I was going to get the small one, but it was just too tiny for my big appetite, so $4 later, i had a passion fruit popsicle in my hand.
Yes, it was good. Very flavorful and definitely delicious on a hot summer day, but I wasn't blown away. Could be because I'm more of an ice cream kind of gal and not so much an icy treat. Is it worth trying? Yes! Would I get it again? Maybe just the small sized one…
If you don't like popsicles that's really something you should take up with your therapist. A summer staple since the beginning of time, even the most commercial of popsicles are good. But now there are these paletas, made with real fruit and real fruit puree in an assortment of tropical flavors from coconut to avocado to guava to pineapple mint.
The staff serving these iced treats are super-friendly and you can tell right away that La Newyorkina is a passion. To be smart in the ice cream and/or ice game you have to cater to all of your clientele and La Newyorkina does just that by having mini-popsicles for $1 (the real deal is $4). This shows a true desire to make people happy because instead of watching children take two bites and attach the rest of the popsicle to their shirt, now there is a size that fits them or those who just want a small, cold treat.
I had the Coco Fresco (fresh coconut) and it was full of real coconut feel and flavor. These are the type of popsicles you need to bite because they are full of real pieces of fruit. However, I learned by the end the ideal way to eat one of these luscious treats – trust me on this one – wait two to three minutes to start eating it. If you give it that time to melt a little, you will have to do less work and you will enjoy the juice more.
Absolutely no excuse for not getting one of these if you go to the Hester Street Fair. If you don't and it is the middle of summer, seriously, call your therapist from the nearby handball courts and have a session.

I've
Heard that
Paletas
Are amazing
But these, while good, struck me as just ice pops.
