Great authentic pastries but the interior isn't that great. The coffee smooth. I like it there but I would go more often if it had better interior.

Almond Croissant – 5/5. Just the right sweetness, crunch, filling, powdered sugar, and flavor! I've had way too many almond croissants with too much filling, overly crunchy/burnt, way too sweet, and covered with way too much powdered sugar (don't ever inhale with powdered stuff on top of food). This one was one of two of the best almond croissants I've ever had (the other a place in the Inner Richmond in San Francisco).
Beignet with Cream – 2/5. Actually, I'm not sure what this one is called but it looks like a sugar donut with pretty piped cream. The cream is practically tasteless to me and has sort of a fluffy butter-like texture (imagine just biting into a stick of room temp butter… ugh). The beignet portion is fine, but nothing special. I wouldn't get this again.
Vanilla Macaron – 1/5. Overwhelming taste of whipped cream, not in a good way. Only took one bite and had to toss it.
Lemon Macaron – 2/5. A little better. Same whipped cream in there but not as disgusting tasting, for some odd reason. Maybe because the lemon flavor of the macaron actually helped tame the cream. A little too much like eating a dense lemon bar…

Sometimes, I do stroll through my old neighborhood. Some cute places were burgeoning between July 2009 and July 2010, but it's getting even ritzier (…well…relatively speaking…) in that little section of Manhattan Valley now; though La Toulousaine is one of those little gems I wish was there when I was; I'd be content and weigh 400 pounds just from their croissants and macarons.
I partook in their plain and chocolate croissants, as well as a selection of their macarons. All were delicious! The croissants were flaky and buttery perfection. The macarons (vanilla, chocolate, lemon, and Grand Marnier) were a treat as well, though the chocolate was a bit denser than I'd prefer. Hmmmm. No matter! I left very content and full of pastries on a Sunday morning, as any New Yorker should.
Breakfast! The macarons here were pretty delicious but so tiny for the price. I think they were $1.80. Staff was friendly if not slow. Their brewed coffee taste like Yuban or Folgers so maybe i'll try the espresso bar next time around. Would come back. I guess they are famous for their croissants?
While I live only two blocks away, I find myself often looking for other places to satisfy my pastry cravings on daily basis. Based on the rating, I am sure I am in the minority in terms of how I feel about La Toulousaine as I am sure many will tout it as a neighborhood gem and rave about their croissants. Like Silver Moon Bakery, most of their offerings in baked goods and beverages to be average at best. Are expectations too high? Possible. Then again, why settle for mediocrity if you care about what you eat?
Save yourself the trip. All two blocks of it.
I have ordered from La Toulousaine a number of times, and the food is decently good. In particular, I have tried the goat cheese and leek quiche, the potatoes, and the croissants.
In the past, I have had good experiences with La Toulousaine, but I just recently had a very negative experience that I wanted to share.
I ordered several items from this bakery through Seamless, with a confirmation email and an estimated delivery time of 30-45 minutes. After over an hour of waiting, I called to inquire about the order. After speaking with a gentleman on the phone, it became clear to me that they had not even begun processing this order and had run out of some of the things that I had ordered. The gentleman on the phone was apologetic but had incredibly insufficient ways to solve the issue. He explained to me that he would come up with a plan and call me back.
After about 20 minutes, I had not received a call and decided to call back myself. I spoke to the same man, and he informed me that the food had not been sent out and would be leaving for delivery soon. Given the fact that I had waited almost two hours at this point, I was shocked that so little attention was being put into my order, which was already lacking items that I had ordered. The meal did not arrive for 45 more minutes after this call.
Although the food is of decent quality, I am shocked by the lack of attention given to customer service. Having had to wait 2 hours for my food and with multiple errors that would not have been solved without my own initiative, I would have imagined that La Toulousaine would have offered some sort of compensation — which did not occur, despite multiple hollow apologies. After this experience, I will not be ordering from La Toulousaine again.
Tried an almond croissant and an iced latte. The almond croissant was decent – crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Very flaky and not exactly easy to eat (but no croissants are easy to eat, haha). The outside surrounding flaky crust was oddly detached from the mushier sweet inside, which was not ideal for me. Presentation was a bit lacking – the croissant looked smushed. Latte was mediocre. When I was here, there was this terrible banging noise from the back that lasted for a good ten minutes, which was distracting. Service was alright. Food was cheap here, and I imagine this would be a good place to work (free wifi and outlets).
