It's a fine bakery but nothing out of this world. I wouldn't go back. The pastries are OK but nothing memorable.
We had a banana fruit tart with Custard cream and an Apricot tart. Both were very tasty. The banana better than the Apricot which seemed old kind of a dry cream because of being there for a while.
They had a walnut Brownie to try which was very good.
The place looks like an East Harlem joint: not well maintained.
The service is pretty dull, they don't understand either English or Spanish and they look like they are doing you a favor.
I was going to order the napoleon but it didn't look fresh.
A blah, meh, whatever you wanna call it place.
Is this a bakery or a museum? Seriously, I wasn't sure if I should eat the pastries or frame them. So beautiful and I am happy to report, scrumptious as well. After much hemming and hawing (the guy helping me was patient and let me be as I was debating, and he calmly answered my "what is this?" queries about certain items since there aren't signs posted), I went with the mini chocolate marble cheesecake tart.
The guy wanted me to let him know what I thought about my sweet. I sat down by the window and went to town. I was going to say "remarkable!" but then a mass group of people came in including one jerk who started yelling at another employee. No matter, I'll be back and will share my praise then.
La Tropezienne is really no frills and you can literally walk or drive right by it and not notice you may have just passed by one of the better bakeries in NYC. I was in the vicinity and could not resist the lure of a fresh pastry.
– Almond Turc was awesome and lived up to the many other yelp review compliments; really buttery rich and with a nice semi-sweet egg custard center. The crisp outer flaky crust was exceptional as was the crunchy texture of the fresh sliced almonds.
TIP: Eat the Almond Turc as soon as you can get pretty soft if not eaten right away. I only ate 1/4 of the Turc right after buying it (choosing to eat the remainder over the course of the two following days) and the pastry became a bit soft. A few minutes in the toaster oven helped, but the Turc never got to the same level of crispness as when it was fresh.
– The Cream Cheese Danish was a delightful pastry. The cream cheese was surprisingly light but still had a nice richness and a hint of sweetness. The bun portion of the Danish had a nice sweet glaze and also had a nice buttery texture / richness.
– Egg Custard Brioche was interesting as it really swung toward the savory side of the spectrum IMO. It's clear La Tropezienne has the science of baking down pretty well (as like the preceding two pastries I mentioned above, the bun was uber rich and cooked perfectly). The custard was really eggy tasting; and I noticed it being less sweet than the custard found in the Almond Turc.
A pleasant savory surprise in comparison to the Almond Turc and Danish.
Overall, La Tropezienne showed to produce some pretty delicious French style pastries, and one would think you just frequented some midtown fancy bakery as opposed to on in East Harlem (not exactly a hotbed of French pastries).
Got the custard croissant. A huge fan! It tasted like an egg tart stuffed into a custard. The place is small but cozy. When I was there early Sunday morning there weren't a lot of people there so there was room to sit and enjoy your breakfast.
This East Harlem mainstay is so much more than a bakery: there's no better cheap lunch than one of their little quiches, pre-made sandwiches, or soups–all very reasonably priced.
French-speaking guys use the front table as an informal hangout, which seems like a good sign. There are a few tiny cafe tables in this cozy space, which doesn't exactly encourage lingering. The staff are a little rough around the edges but perfectly nice.
The pastries dominate the back counter, and they do a brisk business in supplying custom cakes and smaller sweets. But the secret joy of this place is the fact that they will butter you a baguette!
I had to add a star to this review. This bakery is really special. The pastries are great, the coffee is delicious and the staff is super friendly. We love the eclairs and the croissants. My daughters love the madeleines and cookies.
We make a point of coming here when we have to pick up our car or go to Target. Go early because the line could be out the door!
FREAKING DELICIOUS! I literally spent my morning here while in NYC.
FRESH EVERYTHING!
Sinfully delicious seriously! If i lived across from it like my bestie….I'd be the fattest kid ever!
Don't go in expecting service to die for, they are busy….they stay busy. So for them, it's kind of know what you want and order….they have to keep turning customers dude….which is fine by me!
I had a ham and cheese crossiant….two in two days that were bigger than my face. Me and the baby liked it so don't judge me.
Tarts were to die for. Cookies were dumb good….I could rave on and on, but if your in this area…try it! Seriously.
I've been going here for ages. They have nice almond croissants and pastries, but my favorite is creme brulee, unfortunately the creme brulee here is terrible! You would think a French place would have the best but they didn't even burn the top! I guess they need to do a better job training their staff. I don't like the coffee or cookies here either but the hot chocolate is good. They are working on a ne menu cause all the prices have changed.
