Lan Garden 88

“(Please forgive my spelling) I love ha gow (shrimp dumpling) and ha churn (shrimp stuffed inside a wide noodle/pancake almost).”

“Their dim sum was also very nice – my favorites were the sticky rice wrapped in tea leaves and the pork filled glutinous rice donut.”

“Finally a yummy Chinese restaurant in Fort Lee.”

  1. Lan garden touts itself to be a more premium dim sum place and when you first walk in it does have an upscale vibe to it. There are no push carts here, you order a la carte. But on a Saturday, prime dim sum time with a lot of people rolling in, they had a limited menu with classic staples like youtiao not available. Very disappointing. I'll give them credit that the size of the pieces for their shumai and harkow (shrimp dumpling) are pretty big, but there's nothing special about it. The xia Chang fun (shrimp rolled in rice noodles) we didn't even touch cause it was so bland even soy sauce couldn't fix it. For the quality and price (more expensive than most other places), prob won't be back.

  2. So I've been wanting to try Lan Garden for a while now. They claim to be authentic but I think they bent the rules a little to cater to s greater demographic. I'm not saying that they're losing any reputation by doing so, but I was truly looking forward to these flavors. The chicken with black bean sauce on a sizzling hot plate plate was the highlight of the evening without discarding the dumplings and seafood bean curd soup. Prices are a little high but portions are respectable and the cuisine is tasty. 3.5 if I could rate it that way. Yums!

  3. Fresh dim sum in New Jersey. I don't like this location much–not its proximity to someplace but because it's just off the busy 46 and there are no other businesses around it. We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon and there was only one other occupied table. We chose what we wanted from the menu of dim sum options.

Thumbs up for the turnip cake (fresh and fried to a good doneness), tripe, sirloin tips with honey (tasty), super har gaw (I didn't taste it but it got good reviews!), and two pan-fried noodles. Good and honest service (no BS about how great everything they had was).

A clean establishment compared to other Chinese restaurants, which was refreshing.

  4. Let's be honest, there aren't many authentic Chinese/Cantonese restaurants in this area of NJ and having lived in Boston, I feel deprived.

Nonetheless for NJ standards, I thought this place was good.  Their portions were also big – family style big.

They cooked the sautéed snow pea shoot nicely and with good garlic flavor. The seafood fried rice was plentiful. The seafood pan fried noodles didn't have quality or abundant seafood, but was pan fried the way it should be (I've had terrible pan fried noodles in NJ this far).  I also enjoyed their fish and tofu in a clay pot.

I also appreciated the fruit they gave us at the end of the meal, I'm not sure if that was just because of Chinese New Year.  Glad I can rely on coming here for my Chinese food fix.

  5. Best time to go, Sunday around 11:30am. This was our first time eating dimsum here so we didn't know what to expect.

I have to say that the place looks very clean unlike the dimsum place in chinatown NYC. Service was attentive and I would say better than what you would get from chinatown NYC.

We ordered our normal dimsum line up:

Pork Shumai-by bar probably the best I've had comparing what you will normally get from most restaurant in chinatown. You can't really compare this to places in Flushing NYC.
Chicken Feet was also delicious and not too oily.
Shrimp dumpling was excellent, with tons of shrimp inside.
All other dishes were super awesome as well.

The only thing that could be better from this place is the snack/deep fried dimsum cart, the choices for the snacks were very limited and there were no other small plates other than the typical dimsum line up.

Also, there's only one way to get to this place,. US-46 West and if you need to go back to Pal Park to get desserts you're gonna have to drive to US 46 West and make a u-turn when possible.

  6. It's a family style restaurant. Big portion to share with others. A bit expensive. The waiter was nice and helpful in helping is decide what to get. The rice was good. The dim sum was okay. I like their decor and the bathroom was pretty clean. Nice place for a date night.

  7. Super good food and the servers were all so nice! The place is very clean and was more upscale than majorty of Chinese restaurants I've dined in at. We got pan fry noodles, spicy pork chops, fried rice and gyozas which were all delicious and largely portioned. My favorite was the homemade gyozas with their house dark sauce. This place is definately worth the money and I'd happily return when visiting Jersey again.

  8. I did come here with low expectations since I never had dim sum in Jersey. It was actually a lot better than I thought. We came here with a group of 25 people. They seated us right away. They were very attentive, which is way better service than a lot of NYC and SF Chinese restaurants I'm used to. They push around dim sum carts and that's how I like to order my dim sum. I like to look at it before I order. All their dim sum were in decent portions. Most items were good. The shrimp dumplings were one of the bigger ones I've seen and the shrimps were fresh. We also ordered egg tarts for dessert, which was fresh out of the oven. It was sooooo good!!! Overall, I had a good experience and would definitely come back if I'm in the area.
