  1. We ate at one of these last year in DC. I thought it was pretty good. The husband thought it was foo-foo. Well, yes it is.
Today in NY, we stopped in at noon after our excursion in Central Park.  It was crowded. It took a few minutes for a waiter to come over.
We ordered the Parisian ham and Gruyere cheese open face sandwich and the quiche Lorraine. Both good and pricey. Seems pricier than those in DC. But good. And I did get to speak to David Muir of ABC News.

  2. I absolutely adore this place. I was meeting a party of 8 before a concert, it's a perfect seating arrangement for this reason because there are four top tables, two tops and the long picnic style table and benches. We were all seated comfortably without a fuss, pomp and circumstance of most French venues.
The menu; there was nothing on it that didn't sound appetizing. I ended up selecting a curry chicken tartine sandwich accompanied by a salad, and a glass of Chardonnay.  It was delicious. A few of us sampled each others dishes and it was all very tasty.
Dessert; coffee was delicious, I ended up buying a bag to go and have been enjoying it every morning. I had a fresh raspberry tart wich was heavenly.  The lemon and pistachio must be high on the hit list because they were quickly sold out…just another reason to return.
Great food, decent prices, nice atmosphere and great service.
    I highly recommend it.

  3. Service was so poor, waitress forgot our order / water / to get our order among other issues. I also got a weird stomach reaction from the oatmeal :(. Overpriced as well! I'm not coming to this chain anymore. I had enough *sigh*,  and I'm a pretty easy going diner…I think haha.

  4. Looking for a cheap and healthy lunch spot? There we go! You found it…

Good choices in sandwiches, soups and salads – they are incredible quick and you get really good portions for what you are paying!

  5. I love Le Pain Quotidien, and eat at various locations regularly. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst locations I have ever been to. Here's why:

Service: Absolutely terrible. I'm not sure if they are understaffed here but we couldn't find our waitress. Ever. Basically any time we wanted something my husband or I had to get up and find someone to assist. Other tables were having similar issues.

Food: Not great. The chicken curry tartine was quite bland. A side of bread was a bit on the stale side. I had a salmon salad and it was good though! Just a note in case you have a hankering for a boiled egg: various tables around ours sent back their boiled eggs as they weren't cooked through to even soft boiled.

Ambiance: This location is absolutely packed so maybe that's the reason the service and food quality suffers? Also, the restrooms are filthy (seems to be a problem at LPQ across NYC though).

Overall: Locations of this chain south of 34th street seem to be less hectic and are far cleaner. I won't be returning to this LPQ if I can help it.

  6. What's not to love about this place? Or more to the point, from the overall ratings this chain gets, what's to dislike?

So let's take up the what's to dislike:
    Pricey
Menu limits (pancakes? omelettes? go elsewhere)
    Pretentious?
    Coffee is NOT bottomless

    Here's what's to love:
    Great quality; it's a go-to for me.
    Nice setting
Reasonable prices (this place is in a pricey neighborhood)
    Really good coffee

Here's the details: The GF loves the cobb salad, and this is one I'm finally happy to pay for, instead of cringing at it because I'm paying for a bad deal. There's a terrific smoked salmon plate, and was it served with a soft-boiled egg? Or did I order one? Anyway, the smoked salmon is excellent. All the breads, and you get plenty, are terrific. We spend about $40 for two for brunch.

TIP: Learn how to eat a soft-boiled egg.
TIP: Request the preserves and nutella.
BONUS: The Central Park location nearby is a joy.

  7. Amazing what a difference a few blocks can make within the same chain. Yesterday I was at LPQ's Central Park location, which I'd give a low 3. Today right around the corner from my daughter's graduation at Lincoln Center, I tried LPQ's 65th Street location. It was much better. Cozy and warm casual ambience. Friendly attentive waitress. The quiche Lorraine was one of the better ones I've had, and came with a generous plate of delicious leafy greens. Even the orange juice was really good. The only thing keeping it from 5 stardom is IMO I thought it was pricey for breakfast for 2 (i.e. $4.75 for orange juice?!?!). I'm assuming it's because of the neighborhood. I've noticed this at several places during my stay on the Upper West Side

  8. Great place for a reasonably priced tasty lunch. My mum and I ate here and both had quiche with salad. I found the vegetable quiche to be very tasty and was grateful for the large accompanying salad.

I don't feel like there a huge amount of choice, but sometimes that is a good thing and the dishes are better quality. Nice speedy service, would eat at this chain again for a quick refuel lunch.
